The organization suggests following the ABCDE rules for skin cancer detection.

Doctors have discovered around 20-percent of participants with skin abnormalities in the last four years.

That's why it's important that you have a trained professional look at your skin, even in places that the sun doesn't reach. And every year, more people are diagnosed with skin cancer in the USA than with all other cancers combined.

"It tends to occur in younger women, in areas that are often covered. on thighs or stomach or breast or buttocks", said Dr. Elizabeth Hale of NYU Langone Medical Center.

"National surveys over the past two decades show that Canadians have increased their time in the sun but they haven't been protecting themselves properly from the sun's rays".




"There [are] three types of skin cancers that you generally worry about - you have the squamous cell cancer, basal cell cancer, and then you have the melanoma, which is the more dreaded of the three", said Dr. Kulkarni.

"I just had a lot of burns as a kid", she said. Skin cancer could also be hidden in a tattoo, according to Dallas. As much as 90% of melanoma is estimated to be caused by UV exposure, and UV exposure is the most preventable cause of cancer!

The American Cancer Society recommends checking your own skin once a month and having a doctor do it "regularly", which Day says is usually once a year. "Tanning is a sign of damage to the skin".

Skin self-exams should be done at least once a month; one should know the pattern of moles, blemishes, freckles and other marks to immediately notice any changes. If a person works outdoors, he or she should get checked by age 30.

For those who burn easily, the Skin Cancer Foundation says just five severe sunburns can double your chances of developing skin cancer.
