As he contemplated retirement last summer, Mark Williams admits he never imagined sitting stark naked in a post-match press conference having just become world champion for the third time but snooker is a amusing sport.

'Last time I won I had a glass of milk and went to bed but I'm going to party the night away this time'.

After collecting the trophy, Williams appeared at the news conference wearing nothing but a towel to protect his modesty, warning journalists not to "get too close".

Almost true to his world - he later disclosed that Barry Hearn ordered him to wear the towel - Williams strolled to the media room with some interesting tattoos on show.

The 43-year-old didn't even appear at the World Championship last year and had contemplated retiring from snooker following a lack of form.

Williams said he would front the presser naked on the eve of the final against four-time champion John Higgins in Sheffield.

"Previous year I was seriously thinking of giving up" Williams told the BBC.

"If I won this again next year, I'd do this again - I'd cartwheel round here naked".

Williams didn't even make it to the Crucible a year ago having dropped out of the top 16 and lost in the qualifying rounds.

"I tried to put him under pressure tonight but it just wasn't enough". Frame 30 followed a familiar pattern as Williams got in first and made 47 before missing a red to a top corner, and Higgins ruthlessly punished him with a 62 clearance to square the match for the first time since 7-7.

Welshman Mark Williams pinched himself in amazement after withstanding a stoic fightback from John Higgins to seal his third World Championship title.

Williams said: "It's unbelievable".

Last year Williams did not even qualify for the finals and vowed to go naked if won this year's championship. I've done something I never thought I'd do again'.

Instead, the Welsh wizard forged further clear, taking his winning run of frames to seven and establishing a 14-7 lead helped by breaks of 61, 56, 69, 56 and 52. And true to a promise he made earlier in the tournament, the now three-time world champion conducted his post-match press conference completely naked, apart from a strategically placed Betfred towel to cover his
modesty. I didn't want to lose with a session to spare, and at 14-7 that looked possible.
