Last month, Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in announced their commitment to the "full denuclearization" of the Korean Peninsula, in their Panmunjom Declaration reached during their April 27 meeting.

North Korea, over Sunday and Monday through its state-run media and propaganda websites, criticized Japan for calling for maximum pressure and sanctions on the North for denuclearization, calling them "hostile" measures ahead of the U.S.

He slammed the United States for saying that it would not ease the sanctions and pressure until North Korea gives up its nuclear weapons completely.

Trump said on May 4 that the summit's location and timing were already set and would be announced "soon". South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported the military assets include eight U.S. F-22 stealth fighter jets recently sent to participate in the annual joint South Korea-U.S. air training.

A nuclear-free Korean Peninsula is also a topic at the upcoming trilateral summit among South Korea, Japan and China in Tokyo on Wednesday, when the three countries' leaders are expected to issue a statement.

The White House said that Mr Trump's national security adviser, John Bolton, met his South Korean counterpart, Chung Eui-yong, on Friday and both said there were no plans to change the US-South Korea bilateral defence posture.

The USB was presented to Kim after he crossed the heavily guarded DMZ into South Korea by Moon Jae-in last month for the leaders' historic meeting at the border village of Panmunjom. The Pyongyang spokesman continues and says, "The U.S.is deliberately provoking the [Democratic People's Republic of Korea] at the time when the situation on the Korean Peninsula is moving toward peace and reconciliation".

Trump said a troop withdrawal "is not on the table" and said "we haven't been asked to". "The fact that it was also the backdrop for the inter-Korean summit last month is perhaps the main factor counting against it".

"Once the U.S. -North Korea summit date is set, the leaders of the South and North will hold their first conversation over the phone".

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, whose ratings at home have nosedived in recent times, will also hold bilateral talks with the Chinese and South Korean leaderships on the sidelines of the summit, it was reported by The Straits Times. "Now I'm trying to calm it down a little bit", he said.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, at his swearing-in ceremony last week, said the US will not repeat the mistakes of past administrations when it comes to limiting the nuclear programs of rogue nations. "We're having very substantive talks with North Korea".
