In Tuesday's vote, some Republicans switched sides, and Pashinyan won the backing of 59 lawmakers, with 42 voting against him.

After failing to get enough votes in parliament's May 1 vote, Pashinian was nominated again on May 3 by his Yelk faction and allied opposition parties, and remains the only official candidate for prime minister.

Pashinyan was the only candidate for the position. On the same day, the Armenian parliament voted for Serzh Sargsyan as prime minister.

Armenia's parliament has opened a session to elect a prime minister, for which opposition lawmaker and protest leader Nikol Pashinian is the only nominee. He said his first priority was to organize the first fair parliamentary elections in many years.

Armenians have seen their country, once the poster child for democratization following the collapse of the Soviet Union, stagnate in the hands of an entrenched oligarchy while many citizens choose to leave, Broers said.

Supporters say Mr Pashinyan, who was also imprisoned after opposition rallies in 2008 turned deadly, is among history's great peaceful revolutionaries. So Mr. Pashinyan went to Yerevan's central Republic Square, the throbbing heart of the protests, where an estimated 250,000 people had gathered, and called for a nationwide strike at 8:15 the next morning. "There will be no people with privileged rights in Armenia, everyone will be equal before the law", he stressed. He said his ministers will be chosen "as a result of discussions" with his allies and other political groups.

Pending fresh elections "Pashinyan must manoeuvre between the will of the people and the parliamentary ruling party that he does not belong to and which can not begin supporting him", he said.

In an interview during the protests, Mr Pashinyan said dark political forces had been trying to derail Armenia's peaceful revolution. He was sentenced to seven years in prison in 2010 but was released the following year under an amnesty.

Both Bright Armenia and Republic refused to support Pashinian when he embarked on his campaign aimed at preventing Sarkisian from becoming prime minister and thus extending his decade-long rule. "The victory is that you chose who would be prime minister".

After the plebiscite, thousands of opposition supporters rallied against alleged mass violations at polling stations.
