Fifteen protesters were wounded by live fire, four of them seriously, including a 16-year-old boy shot in the head, Gaza health officials said.

In short, the confluence of events means the chances of even the smallest miscalculation carrying big consequences are sky high.

Tensions were spiraling ahead of Monday, when the USA will relocate its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in a controversial move condemned by the Palestinians.

Hundreds of guests will attend the opening event, including the USA ambassador to Israel, David Friedman; the daughter and son-in-law of the president, Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner; Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin; and Jason Greenblatt, the United States special representative for global negotiations.

Trump will address Monday's ceremony by video, and he'll be represented by his daughter and adviser Ivanka Trump and son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner.

The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement on Saturday strongly condemning the governments of Hungary, Romania and the Czech Republic for blocking the release of a statement by the European Union (EU) that rejected USA plans to officially open its Israeli embassy in Jerusalem on Monday, May 14th.

But Friedman insisted that the embassy decision had been taken purely in the U.S. national interest. The demonstrations have been organized by Gaza's Hamas rulers, but are fueled by despair among the territory's 2 million people.

The latest bloody attack by Israel came only a few days after President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. was pulling out of the Iran nuclear accord and would enforce punishing economic sanctions against Iran.

An Israeli army spokeswoman had no immediate comment on the report.

"My own discussions with many different Palestinians is that there remains a significant interest for peace, for a better life, for better education ... and all the things that could be made available in this region if there was more peace and less violence".

Some 15,000 Palestinians rallied along the security fence with Israel on Friday as part of the Great March of Return protests, which have continued in the enclave since late March. The demonstration was held ahead of the 70th anniversary of the "Nakba", the displacement of Palestinians that began with the establishment of Israel.

Israeli troops killed a Palestinian and hundreds of others were hurt on Friday, Palestinian medical workers said, bringing to 44 the number killed during a six-week protest at the Gaza-Israel border.

Meanwhile, a Israeli soldier was lightly wounded Friday evening in an apparent car-ramming attack in northern Samaria near the Jewish community of Shavei Shomron, reported the IDF.
