World Health Organization preparing for 'worst case scenario' in DRC Ebola outbreak

The affected area in Bikoro is remote, with limited communication and poor transportation infrastructure, the World Health Organization said.

Tedros said he's in contact with the country's health minister and has assured him that "we're ready to do all that's needed to stop the spread of Ebola quickly".

Most of the cases so far have been recorded around the village of Ikoko Impenge, near the northwestern town of Bikoro.

Four of the virus species are known to cause disease in humans - Zaire, Sudan, Bundibugyo and Tai Forest. Eighteen people died as of Friday, including a nurse.

Ebola experts have various suspicions about why the DRC remains so vulnerable. Surprisingly, the Ministry of Health and the Lilongwe District Health Office in particular and other border districts received vehicles to deal with Ebola but it appears the vehichles are being misused and are not used for their intended purposes.

Ebola viruses are a group of particularly nasty viruses that have a significant burden across Africa.

Nigeria was hailed as having contained the virus in 2014, with 8 deaths, following fears that it could spread through the commercial capital of some 20 million inhabitants and across Africa's most populous country of around 180 million people.

Between them, the two cities have a population of more than 12 million.

The Kenyan government has come out to speak following Ebola outbreak in DRC.

Sawyer, a Liberian-American, died at a hospital and infected several health workers, including Stella Ameyo Adedavoh, a doctor who defied orders to allow him to leave the hospital and saved Nigeria from a mass outbreak in the process.

Peter Piot, director of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, who was part of the team that originally discovered the virus in 1976, also believes people's interactions with infected bats may be behind the repeated outbreaks there. Salama said confusion surrounding possible links between the two outbreaks may be stem from nonspecific symptoms of the disease. More than 450 million people are residing in areas affected from Ebola viruses and majority come under rural section.

They use rigorous protocols to protect medical personnel with disposable full-body suits, masks, goggles and gloves and disinfecting sprays. DRC is about the size of Greenland-almost a million square miles-and much of it has always been forested, notes Peter Hotez, dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine.

Despite regular outbreaks every few years, death tolls in Congo have been significantly lower.

Ebola is a deadly, fast-spreading disease that kills its sufferers in a matter of days. The Congo Republic is just on the other side of the river. "In the coming days, we will train another 150 volunteers on the ground to strengthen community surveillance in Bikoro and neighbouring health zones".

The Director-General of the Ghana Health Service said they received an alert from the World Health Organization (WHO).

WHO has provided technical and operations support to the Ministry of Health and Partners in the activation of multi-partner multi-agency Emergency Operations Centre to coordinate the response at all levels. According to the CDC, some of the symptoms include fever, severe headaches, muscle pain, fatigue, diarrhea, vomiting, and hemorrhage, in worse cases. That makes me think this is the tip of the iceberg. "It is appropriate to be taking this seriously and mounting a firm response", Bausch says. Despite the remote location, one worrying sign is that the outbreak involves three separate locations that cover about 37 miles.
