Oklahoma Governor Vetoes Bill That Would Have Made Gun Licenses Unnecessary

Oklahoma Action Needed: Constitutional Carry Legislation Awaits Governor Fallin's Signature Governor signs law making it legal to ban gays & lesbians from adopting in Oklahoma

Oklahoma's Republican Gov. Mary Fallin vetoed a bill late Friday that would have authorized adults to carry firearms without a permit or training, dealing a rare defeat to the National Rifle Association in a conservative state.

Oklahoma Senate Bill 1140 allows agencies to deny adoptions and foster care placements if a given placement violates an agency's "written religious or moral convictions or policies". While that may be technically true, it would allow agencies to reject couples "in accordance with their beliefs" ― that is, because those couples are in the LGBTQ community.

"While we are deeply disappointed that Governor Fallin choose to sign discrimination into law, we are more concerned about the children - desperately looking for homes - that will be harmed by this disgraceful legislation", said Troy Stevenson, Executive Director of Freedom Oklahoma. "This measure serves no legitimate policy goal".

As queer and trans advocacy groups in Oklahoma pursue legal action to overturn the law, almost every leading civil rights organization has come out to oppose SB 1140. "Instead, the bill will help continue Oklahoma's successful placement of children with a broad array of loving families and basically maintain the status quo by setting forth in statute practices which have successfully worked for the best interest of Oklahoma children".

We hope that other governors, most immediately Kansas Gov. Colyer, will not follow Oklahoma's example and will put the needs of the child first. Oklahoma's leaders must live with that, and live with the reputational fallout that it may bring.

Currently, five states - Mississippi, Michigan, Virginia, Texas, Alabama, South Dakota and North Dakota - have similar laws on the books, although Michigan's law is being challenged in the federal courts thanks to the ACLU. "Rather than focusing on empowering families or uniting children with loving parents, Governor Fallin and Oklahoma Republicans want to strip qualified potential parents of their ability to provide for a child in need".

But as INTO previously reported, Catholic groups have been strong-arming state lawmakers into passing anti-LGBTQ adoption bills by threatening to close up shop if the discriminatory laws aren't introduced.

LGBTQ advocates quickly criticized the new law.

"Once more, I consider the firearms legal guidelines we presently have in place are efficient, acceptable and minimal, and serve to reassure our residents that people who find themselves carrying handguns on this state are certified to take action", Fallin's assertion ended.

The new law goes into effect November 1. Our message to Governor Fallin, and the lawmakers who championed this travesty is simple: "we'll see you in court!"
