Authorities also set up an area to receive anxious parents who were rushing to the school to pick up their children. Police also said they had recovered one firearm from the scene at Highland High School in Palmdale, California, about 60 miles north of Los Angeles.

Deputies said they had secured both locations, and were investigating.

The lockdown at the school was lifted several hours after the shooting and school officials said they would begin reuniting students with their parents.

Los Angeles County deputies detained a 14-year-old former Highland High School student in the shooting of a 15-year-old boy, who was hit in the arm.

"That student is going to be OK", he said.

The victim, also 14, was shot in the arm and is listed in stable condition at a hospital, authorities said.

The suspect called his father after the shooting, telling his dad he fired the gun in the air.

It wasn't clear Friday afternoon if the shooting happened outside or inside the school.

The sheriff's department says deputies searched the school and found no evidence of a crime. McDonnell said the boy's mother had called the officer earlier in the morning to tell him she and her husband were having trouble with him and that the teen had run away.

The suspect was expected to face attempted murder charges, McDonnell added.

Lydia Gilbert, a junior at Highland, said her mother was dropping her off when a student ran up and warned her there was a shooting.

The victim is a student, Capt. Darren Harris, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, told the Los Angeles Times.

Faculty also provided surveillance video of the suspect arriving and leaving the school, which "assisted in the quick apprehension" of the suspect, McDonnell said. As officers swarmed the library, more 911 calls came in reporting that gunshots were heard at an elementary school across town.

The school sign reads, "bully-free zone", at Highland High School where a shooting occurred on May 11, 2018 in Palmdale, California.

Investigators say the shooting stemmed from a dispute between the 14-year-old and the victim. It underscored the national debate over gun control and gun rights that intensified after the February shooting deaths of 17 students and staff members at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
