Festival organizers, long criticized for not including enough films by women over the years, have organized women's empowerment conferences next week when Cannes festival director Thierry Femaux is expected to make an announcement about changes to the festival's programming in the #MeToo era.

At the conclusion the protest, Blanchett and veteran documentary-maker Agnes Varda read a collective statement from the group that called for institutions to provide safer working conditions for women, and for governments to uphold equal pay laws. In a statement the group said that the number of women present was chosen to match the total number of films made by female film-makers that have appeared in competition at the festival in its 71-year history.

From actresses to directors, producers and agents, the women participating in the march reflect the breadth of female talent around the globe but acutely under-represented in the cinema world.

She concluded: "We acknowledge all of the women and men who are standing for change. Trust us. I am planning on squeezing in another one!", the singer okes as she poses in the back of a vehicle.

The dramatic gesture was organized by 5050×2020, a French equality movement, and took place just before the premiere of Girls of the Sun, a film by Eva Husson.

Cannes was the scene of several of the Hollywood mogul's alleged attacks on actresses. The group supposedly includes a swath of female heavyweights in Hollywood from actresses like Salma Hayek to directors like Wonder Woman's Patty Jenkins and activist-journalists like Melissa Silverstein.

Only four of the 111 winners have been female - and two of them were previous year when Sofia Coppola became only the second woman to secure the best director trophy with her American Civil War drama "The Beguiled".

Cheryl stunned in the sheer number by Lebanese designer Zuhair Midas and her sensational figure was visible in the semi-transparent and beaded gown.

"There are many women on the jury but I wish there were more in competition", the Australian-born star told French media earlier this week.

One of the first women to call out Weinstein, Blanchett co-founded the "Time's Up" movement to support abuse victims.

Her comments echo those of fellow actress Jessica Chastain who served on the jury a year ago and lambasted Cannes for its "disturbing" depiction of women.

Women have made up barely 3.5 percent of the best director and best screenplay winners over the past seven decades.
