- A Salmonella outbreak caused by contaminated eggs has made at least 35 people in nine states sick, worrying food safety experts and average grocery store customers alike as authorities scramble to implement a large recall for more than 207 million eggs.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday that the number of illnesses had risen to 35, an increase of 12 cases since the initial egg recall notice in mid-April. The outbreak, which has been traced to a single egg producer, has resulted in 11 hospitalizations.

The eggs were distributed from a farm in Hyde County, North Carolina and reached consumers in the following states: Colorado, Florida, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia through retail stores and restaurants via direct delivery. NY and Virginia have clocked the most number of cases, tallying eight each. Rose Acre Farms voluntarily recalled more than 200,000 shell eggs on April 13 due to possible contamination with the bacteria.

In April, Rose Acre Farms recalled its products after federal officials tied the illnesses to the company's facility in North Carolina, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said. The eggs were sold under various brand names, including Coburn Farms, Country Daybreak and Crystal Farms.

Egg cartons with the following numbers were impacted: P-1065 (the plant number) and numbers between 011 and 102. "We vow to do better in the future". Nine states have reported infected people. Symptoms include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. The outbreak spread to almost 40 states and sickened 132 people. No deaths have been reported. "It's very hard to know that so they have to do a large recall".

There is aditional information on the recall on the FDA website and the CDC website. Another 16 people recalled that they ate dishes with egg at a restaurant, with representatives from the restaurants confirming to the CDC that they used shell eggs when preparing the dishes.
