Why the numbers matter: The report gives us a picture of the sheer quantity of content Facebook's software and human moderators are churning through.

The report, which was published on its site, covers its enforcement efforts between October 2017 to March 2018, and it covers six areas: graphic violence, adult nudity and sexual activity, terrorist propaganda, hate speech, spam, and fake accounts.

The self-assessment came Tuesday in Facebook's first breakdown of how much material it removes in an effort to shield its 2.2 billion users from offensive content and prevent the social network from becoming a terrorist recruitment center.

Facebook said Tuesday it took down 21 million "pieces of adult nudity and sexual activity" in the first quarter of 2018, and that 96 percent of that was discovered and flagged by the company's technology before it was reported.

Key to fighting spam is taking down the fake accounts that spread it.

The new report was released in conjunction with Facebook's latest Transparency Report, which said that across the world government requests for account data increased by four percent in the second half of 2017 compared to the first half.

Guy Rosen, VP of product management, said the social media giant blocks millions of daily attempts to create fake accounts from being registered. For instance, nudity only received seven to nine views for every 10,000 content views.

Facebook's vice president of product management, Guy Rosen, said in a blog post Tuesday about the newly-released report that nearly all of the 837 million spam posts Facebook took down in the first quarter of 2018 were found by Facebook before anyone had reported them.

"AI still needs to get better before we can use it to effectively remove more linguistically nuanced issues like hate speech in different languages, but we're working on it", said Zuckerberg to CNet. Furthermore, 2.5 million pieces of hate speech were removed although Rosen concedes that Facebook's technology still has some work to do in this category as only 38 percent was flagged automatically.

We're often asked how we decide what's allowed on Facebook - and how much bad stuff is out there. Facebook noted that while its artificial intelligence technology found and flagged many standard violations, more progress needed to be done. It said the rise was due to improvements in detection.

"We believe that increased transparency tends to lead to increased accountability and responsibility over time, and publishing this information will push us to improve more quickly too", wrote Rosen.

Meanwhile, Facebook said on Monday it has suspended around 200 apps as part of its investigation into whether companies misused personal user data gathered from the social network.

Also, it claims to have disabled 583 million fake accounts.
