Thousands of Gaza residents turned out for the funerals of loved ones killed by Israeli troops on Tuesday as protests over the opening of the new United States embassy in Jerusalem resulted in the bloodiest day for Palestinians since the 2014 Gaza conflict.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel showed understanding for Israel's security interests in a call with Mr Netanyahu, but stressed that the violence should not be a means to achieving political goals, her spokesman Steffen Seibert said.

Israeli ambassador Danny Danon told the council: "You must tell Hamas that violence is not the answer".

"I am profoundly alarmed and concerned by the sharp escalation of violence and the number of Palestinians killed and injured in the Gaza protests", said U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres.

Both Israel and the United States said Hamas, which rules Gaza, instigated the violence, an allegation denied by the militant group opposed to Israel's existence.

After talks with British Prime Minister Theresa May, Erdogan warned that history "will not forgive" Israel or the United States for moving the American embassy to Jerusalem in defiance of outrage in the Islamic world.

The diplomatic pressures on Israel, which has been harshly criticized for its use of live ammunition against the protesters, also grew on other fronts as officials around the world denounced the Gaza killings and called for inquiries.

At least 2,400 others were wounded in the bloodiest day in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict since the 2014 Gaza war.

Rights groups have said the use of potentially lethal force against protesters who pose no immediate threat to soldiers' lives is unlawful.

"When we talk about peaceful resistance, we are deceiving the public", Zahhar said.

She says that Europe needs to concentrate on finding allies, expanding its strategy, to find a solution.

Nearly 3,000 people were injured as protests at the border between Israel and Palestine turned ugly.

"They don't understand the difference, and Israel is losing points in the worldwide community because of what is happening in Gaza".

Palestinians envision East Jerusalem as the capital of a state they hope to establish in the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

"Israel will no longer hold back from defending its honor and will safeguard its borders and citizens", he wrote.

It may be recalled that both houses of the Parliament have already voiced their position on the U.S. decision.

In Umm al-Fahm, hundreds of Palestinian citizens of Israel marched alongside Arab members of Knesset.

Turkey and Israel on Tuesday ordered envoys to leave in tit-for-tat moves and exchanged bitter accusations as a row over the Israeli army's killing of dozens of Palestinians threatened a 2016 reconciliation deal.
