Michigan State University reach $724 million settlement with Nassar victims

Larry Nassar The settlement calls for $US425 million to be paid to current claimants

Olympic gold medalists McKayla Maroney, Gabby Douglas, Aly Raisman, and Jordan Wieber have all said they were assaulted by Nassar. Under the agreement, $425 million would be paid to current claimants and $75 million would be set aside for any future claims.

Nassar, 54, who is serving a federal prison sentence of 40 to 175 years in MI, had worked for decades with MSU students as well as U.S. Olympic gymnasts who alleged he abused them, including gold medalists Jordyn Wieber, Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas and McKayla Maroney. When it was handed down in January, Judge Rosemarie Aquilina said to Nassar: "I just signed your death warrant". And assuming it becomes final, the settlement will not resolve many other aspects of this situation for Michigan State, which is under investigation by the Education Department and the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

Nassar worked at MSU and USA Gymnastics for decades.

The agreement with attorneys representing 332 women and girls was a "global settlement", Michigan State University (MSU) said.

The criminal probe into the university's role in the scandal is being conducted by special counsel Bill Forsyth on behalf of Michigan's top law enforcement office.

A key question for many victims has been who knew about Nassar's behavior and who could have stopped him earlier.

"This historic settlement came about through the bravery of more than 300 women and girls who had the courage to stand up and refused to be silenced", Manly said in a statement.

Larry Nassar pleaded guilty to molesting women and girls under the guise that it was treatment and received sentences of between 40 and 175 year and 50 and 125 years.

The institution said no confidentiality agreements or no-disclosure agreements would be attached to the settlement, which it described as agreed to "in principle". The school had insisted that no one covered up assaults, although Nassar's boss, former medical school dean William Strampel, was later charged with failing to properly supervise him and committing his own sexual misconduct.

The deal applies only to Michigan State.

Interim President John Engler has previously said that the money needed for settling the lawsuits filed against the university could impact tuition, but after a meeting with the Associated Students of Michigan State University, or ASMSU, he told The State News tuition might not be affected by the litigation. Its general fund budget is $1.36 billion. There are other lawsuits that have been filed against a number of others - such as the U.S. Olympic Committee, famed gymnastics coaches Bela and Martha Karolyi - that are not involved with this settlement and will be progressing in their respective cases.
