RYAN Bertrand will not be playing for England at the World Cup in Russian Federation next month after Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate overlooked the Saints left-back.

There is a distinct lack of creativity in England's midfield after Southgate chose to overlook Jack Wilshere and Jonjo Shelvey too. Gary Cahill is likely to lead the Three Lions at the World Cup.

"We felt the players all needed to be in on merit after their performances this season".

Youngster Trent Alexander-Arnold was one of the surprise inclusions - Dreamt of going to a World Cup since I was a kid.

We look at how the players reacted to the announcement and what the football media and England fans think of Southgate's 23-man squad.

Goalkeepers: Jack Butland (Stoke City), Jordan Pickford (Everton), Nick Pope (Burnley). Lallana's injury-ravaged season has cost him, with England also denied the services of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain following the knee injury he sustained last month.

Most players will kick-off their World Cup preparations on Monday, although Manchester United and Chelsea players will get time off after the FA Cup final - just as those involved in Liverpool's Champions League final will. Among them is Arsenal's Danny Welbeck, who missed a chunk of the season through injury but was named alongside Harry Kane, Jamie Vardy and Marcus Rashford in the striking department.

Jordan Henderson, Raheem Sterling, Eric Dier, Ashley Young, Dele Alli, Jesse Lingard, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Fabian Delph.

On the stand-by list are Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton and centre-back James Tarkowski, West Brom midfielder Jake Livermore and Liverpool's Adam Lallana.

But 19-year-old Liverpool right-back Alexander-Arnold will be on the flight to Russian Federation as Southgate has opted for a youthful selection in what he hopes will prove a bold new era for the under-achieving national team.

"The selection process has been over months really, it's not just been the last few weeks".

"You need half of your team to be world class to be favourites in a competition like this and we haven't got that at the moment, but we will have that in four years and six years".

On Wednesday, Southgate unveiled the 23-man squad he will take to Russian Federation this summer - and now thoughts turn to how England could line up for their opening game against Tunisia on 18 June.
