"US sanctions will not be without effect, so it is our duty, in the Commission and in the European Union, to do what we can to protect our European businesses, especially SMEs", said Friday. the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker.

In a clear response to the United States move, EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker has announced that the bloc plans to apply a 1996 law that would prohibit European companies from complying with any sanctions the USA will reintroduce against Tehran, Deutsche Welle reported.

The EU has officially adopted measures to protect European companies working in Iran if the U.S. reimposes sanctions against Tehran.

Earlier this month, President Donald Trump opted to withdraw the U.S. from a joint nuclear agreement with Iran, and chose to reinstate all sanctions that had previously been imposed on Iran, but were waived when the deal was signed in 2015.

The Commission said European Energy Commissioner Miguel Arias Canete will meet Iranian officials in Tehran during a three-day trip from May 18 to try to reassure Iran and strengthen energy relations.

The commission also wants to enable the European Investment Bank to finance activities in Iran, noting that this would be particularly useful for smaller firms.

The EU's trade with Iran grew 60% between 2016 and 2017 - after the signing of the nuclear deal - said Cañete.

Earlier this month, the USA announced its intention to withdraw from the JCPoA, an agreement which prevents Iran from developing nuclear weapons in exchange for greater participation in the global economy.

Iran's exports of mainly fuel and other energy products to the European Union in 2016 jumped 344 percent to 5.5 billion euros ($6.58 billion) compared with the previous year. A spokesperson for the company told Climate Home News: "We take great care to ensure we always comply with applicable sanctions".

The nuclear deal removed most worldwide sanctions in 2016 in return for Tehran curbing its nuclear programme. Meanwhile, Washington put forward demands, which can not be implemented.

Tehran has demanded practical measures from its European partners in order to win domestic support for its continued compliance with the deal, which was negotiated with Germany, France, Britain, Russia, China and the US. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said that Tehran would not abandon the JCPOA and would continue to comply with its obligations.
