Weinstein's attorney Benjamin Brafman stated in a news conference that they, "intend to move very quickly to dismiss these charges".

Film producer Harvey Weinstein leaves the New York Police Department's 1st Precinct in Manhattan in New York May 25, 2018. Weinstein may have wanted to have sex, but didn't assume from the get-go he would have to rape the woman.

Weinstein has been accused of sexual misconduct by more than 70 women, with some of the allegations dating back decades.

Weinstein has denied having non-consensual sex with anyone.

Numerous women, including several celebrities, have come forward with allegations that Weinstein repeatedly engaged in unwanted, inappropriate and aggressive sexual behavior since reports of his serial misconduct first surfaced a year ago.

"A year ago, no one would have dreamed he would be taken down by a group of fed up women who were screaming the truth, but never listened to", Sivan said, speaking with Variety the same day as Weinstein's arrest.

Weinstein, wearing a dark jacket over a blue sweater and white open-collared shirt and dark jeans, appeared pale, and stood next to Brafman, staring into the middle distance while prosecutors described a bail agreement.

They are the first criminal charges filed against Weinstein, who surrendered to police this morning and was released on a $1 million-dollar cash bail.

Standing alongside his defence attorney, the former Tinseltown powerbroker looked glum during the brief arraignment, agreeing to post bail at $1 million cash, surrender his passport and be fitted with a Global Positioning System monitoring device.

He walked into the station clutching several books, apparently including the Rodgers and Hammerstein biography "Something Wonderful" and a volume on late director Elia Kazan.

He adds Weinstein's ability to easily pay the bond and also defend himself with high-priced and power lawyers shows how this case differs from the norm.

Lawyers did not identify the woman involved in the rape charge.

It would be the first criminal case against Weinstein since the revelations about him erupted last October and sparked the cultural "reckoning" that became the MeToo movement.

"I actually did not believe this day would come", she said on NBC's "Megyn Kelly Today" program. A court complaint said Weinstein raped her in a Manhattan hotel in 2013. The initial investigations into Weinstein have created massive ripple effects in the film industry and many other industries, and across the world.

We may find out their decision when Weinstein next appears in court on July 30.

In 2017, Weinstein was expelled from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Companies he co-founded, Miramax and the Weinstein Co., were behind such hits as Pulp Fiction, Shakespeare in Love and The King's Speech.

Too many allegations lost to the statute of limitations. The New York Times reported that the investigation will examine whether Weinstein violated federal stalking laws. "It was rape and sexual assault". Weinstein shook his head and softly said, "No".

The district attorney and police have been investigating Weinstein for months, under growing calls from the Time's Up movement and Hollywood actresses to bring the disgraced producer to justice. The district attorney said his decision was based on the merits of the case.

You can head over to Variety for their full report on Harvey Weinstein turning himself in to NY police, and take a look at a number of tweets from those responding to the arrest, including Rose McGowan's interview on Good Morning America.

NY authorities have been investigating the disgraced producer for months, under growing pressure from Hollywood actresses to bring him to justice, and their probes are ongoing.

"The first Bill Cosby trial ended in a mistrial". In the retrial, the judge allowed five other accusers to tell similar stories of alleged abuse by the former TV star.

Weinstein now has until next Wednesday to decide whether he wants to testify in front of a grand jury. She also reps actress Paz de la Huerta, another Weinstein survivor.
