England began their Test summer with a nine-wicket defeat early on day four against Pakistan after finding themselves unable to sustain the previous evening's brief fightback at Lord's.

Victory, completed before lunch on the fourth day, put Pakistan 1-0 up in a two-match series ahead of the second Test at Headingley that starts on Friday.

Azhar Ali was 18 not out and Haris Sohail, missed in the slips when Ben Stokes dived across Dawid Malan, unbeaten on 21.

But, in truth the damage had always been done by a pair of top-order slumps that saw England, so often dominant in early-season home conditions, dismissed for 184 in their first innings before declining to 110 for six second time around.

Ed Smith, England's new national selector, will face pressure to shake up the side after his first game in charge ended in a resounding defeat.

Pakistan were able to outplay England on all four days of play in the opening Test at the Lord's, a very rare sight for the visitors and the hosts.

Having been bowled out for 184 in their first innings, Joe Root's side fared only marginally better in their second attempt, England slumping from 235-6 overnight to 242 all out after just 27 minutes and 25 deliveries of the morning session on Sunday. If we could have got two or three in a cluster that would have helped but they kept getting scores. England created chances but didn't take them.

"We have a very inexperienced team but we are very confident in our players". So far, they've out-bowled and out-batted us'.

"It was not good enough, if I'm being brutally honest", said Joe Root, England's captain.

England's slim hopes of rescuing the game had rested with the recalled Jos Buttler and newcomer Bess, who resumed on 66 and 55 respectively.

Buttler fell in the second over, trapped lbw by man-of-the-match Mohammad Abbas for 67 and failing to get the decision overturned on review. Mark Wood had no answer to Amir's wiles when the new ball was taken midway through the next over - he grazed Amir through to Sarfraz for 4.

Stuart Broad made his Test-best 169 against Pakistan at Lord's in 2010 - a match that became known for a spot-fixing "sting" that saw three Pakistan players, including Amir, jailed by an English court and given five-year bans by the International Cricket Council.

Cook, playing in a record-equalling 153rd consecutive Test, was bowled by an excellent delivery from Mohammad Amir to end an innings lasting over three hours.

It took Pakistan just 12.4 overs to reach their victory target, with Sohail hitting a six and a four against 20-year-old off-spinner Bess, who went wicketless on debut, as Pakistan sealed their to fifth win in a Test at Lord's in style.
