Israel starts building fortified maritime barrier on coastal border with Gaza

Two Palestinians killed by Israeli tank fire in Gaza Israeli tanks shell Gaza Strip, Islamic Jihad group says two militants killed

During Israel's 2014 assault on Gaza, members of the military wing of Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist movement that governs the Gaza Strip, managed to swim to Israeli territory and launch an attack on Israeli army installation before being killed. The incident happened east of the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip, a ministry spokesman said.

Its intended destination was not announced.

Two Palestinians have been killed early on Sunday in an Israeli bombardment in the Gaza Strip, officials said.

The barrier is to consist of three layers, one of which is to be underwater, and is expected to be completed within a year, the statement added.

"The IAF attacked terrorist targets deep inside the Gaza Strip last night".

"This is the only barrier of its kind in the world, which will effectively block the possibility of infiltrating into Israel via the sea..."

Organizers said they would ramp up demonstrations on Tuesday with a flotilla of boats that would set off from Gaza in an attempt to break Israel's maritime blockade of the enclave.

Nine Turkish activists were killed in the operation, and another died in hospital in 2014.

Over a hundred Palestinians have been killed in the rolling protests and clashes, mostly from Israeli gunfire and thousands more injured.

Low-level demonstrations along the border have continued since protests peaked on May 14, when at least 61 Palestinians were killed as tens of thousands of Gazans protested the USA transfer of its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

There have been no Israeli casualties along the Gaza frontier, but Israel has reported extensive damage to farmland on its side of the border from firebomb-bearing kites flown over from Gaza.

The Gaza Strip has been under Israeli blockade for more than a decade.

Around 5,000 Palestinians had turned out for protests against Israeli forces on Friday, the smallest number since the six-week-long "Great March of Return" protests kicked off on March 30 demanding the right to return to ancestral homelands in what is now Israel.

Egypt has also kept its border with Gaza largely closed in recent years, but has opened it for the entire Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
