Italy will no longer be ‘Europe’s refugee camp,’ new Interior Minister says

The ceremony capped a roller-coaster week of political and financial turmoil that saw stock markets around the world plunge and Italy's borrowing rates soar on the threat of a new election in Europe's third-largest economy.

Conte, along with the rest of his cabinet, will be sworn in Friday.

Italy has sworn in Giuseppe Conte as the head of a new anti-establishment government following weeks of political drama.

M5S leader Luigi Di Maio and League leader Matteo Salvini will join the government as deputy prime ministers.

But the alliance between the M5S and the League will only have a relatively narrow majority in the Italian Senate, easing some concerns among investors and officials in Brussels that the new government could take drastic actions.

Mr Salvini also visited the port of Pozzallo, where a boat carrying more than 150 migrants from sub-Saharan Africa landed on Friday after being rescued by a humanitarian group.

The UK is, Prime Minister May said, leaving the European Union but it is not leaving Europe, and having good relations with the European Union and member states was of great importance.

"We'll work with determination to improve the living quality of all Italians", he added.

Mr Di Maio will also serve as labour and economic development minister, and Mr Salvini as interior minister.

Just days ago fresh elections had seemed inevitable, but on Thursday, President Sergio Mattarella named political novice Conte as prime minister for the second time in less than a fortnight and approved his revised government forged by the nationalist League and anti-establishment Five Star Movement.

Later, the president asked ex-IMF economist Mr Cottarelli to form a government until fresh elections could be held. Mattarella had vetoed the 5-Star-League's first proposed candidate for economy minister because of his euroskeptic views.

The new government features 18 ministers, including five women.

Italy hosted the European Union's founding Treaty of Rome 60 years ago, but the once enthusiastically pro-EU Italians have progressively become disenchanted with Europe, blaming its fiscal rules for two decades of economic stagnation.

However the new government will have to square its reforms with its debt mountain, which represents 132 percent of its gross domestic product, more than double the EU's 60-percent ceiling.

The opposition Democratic Party warned that the new government would be "Right-wing, populist and unsafe".

Italy's new populist leaders commemorated the founding of the Italian republic by attending a pomp-filled military parade Saturday - and then promised to get to work creating jobs and expelling migrants.

While confirming Italy's North Atlantic Treaty Organisation commitments, the new government's policy agenda calls for lifting European Union sanctions against Russian Federation as well as the opening of dialogue and partnerships, given Moscow's economic, commercial and strategic importance.
