SpaceX delays plans to send tourists around Moon

SpaceX goes for its 11th launch of the year early on Monday SpaceX prepares for Monday launch of SES-12 satellite

It was flown beyond Earth's atmosphere atop one of SpaceX's reusable Falcon 9 rockets in a launch early Monday morning from Cape Canaveral, Florida. The satellite was set to be deployed roughly 32 minutes after liftoff.

However, the WSJ piece also notes that SpaceX is facing uncertain demand for Falcon Heavy, and that the company itself is projecting a significant drop in launches next year due to fewer contracts for large satellite launches-smaller satellites can be happily sent into orbit using SpaceX's smaller, more proven Falcon 9 rocket. SpaceX may try to recover the Falcon 9 fairings at sea, which make up the rocket's nose cone, where the payload is encased. The window to launch the rocket opens at 12:29 a.m. Monday and last for four hours. The satellite operator, SES, tweeted, "What a attractive start to the week!"

Instead, the satellite will rely on electric propulsion, using pulses of xenon gas to slowly circularize its orbit around the equator over a period of months.

'SES-12 is a uniquely designed satellite that will allow telephone companies, mobile network operators and internet service providers to deliver more reliable cellular backhaul and faster broadband service, ' SpaceX said in a statement.

"Airbus salutes SES's ambitions regarding innovation and responsiveness in a rapidly changing market and we acknowledge their strong support for all-electric satellite technology", said Nicolas Chamussy, Head of Space Systems. The good side of all this is it actually extends our (on orbit) life capability from 15 to 22 years.

The satellite is created to expand SES' capabilities to deliver very small aperture terminal and high-throughput data connectivity and direct-to-home broadcasting services in the Asia-Pacific and Middle East. The rocket is carrying a communications satellite.

"If you take all those numbers together, this is really exciting for us", he said.
