'It's saddening': Massive river of lava wipes out hundreds of homes

Giant acidic steam clouds rise from ocean after lava spill in Hawaii (VIDEO) Explosion rocks Hawaii's Kilauea volcano, sending ash 1 mile high

Lava from the Kilauea volcano destroyed hundreds of homes on the Big Island overnight.

Two residents of Kapoho, Dodie Jordan and Gregory Braun, shared emotional stories in Pahoa on Tuesday evening, after a lava flow consumed all of Vacationland and most of Kapoho Beach Lots the night before.

While no-one has been killed and only one lava-related injury has been reported, the number of destroyed homes dwarfs other recent American eruptions.

The latest two communities affected by the lava flow had been ordered evacuated beforehand and there were no immediate reports of any casualties. The area is primarily home to vacation rentals, but there are a lot of permanent residences there too.

Lava is also believed to have filled in a small bay at the eastern tip of Hawaii's Big Island, civil defense officials said on Tuesday. That fissure is the origin of the lava flow that devastated Kapoho. "Lava is entering the ocean in the Vacationland subdivision".

"He was very depressed", Okabe said of how Kim felt about losing his vacation home.

The entire neighbourhood of Vacationland on Big Island has now been covered in lava.

Lava had filled the shallow Kapoho Bay before 2 p.m. Tuesday.

So far, it was unclear how many homes have been affected, but Hawaii Civil Defense Administrator Talmadge Magno said it was fair to say it was hundreds.

Carolyn Boudreault, a Kapoho resident who is now staying in Boston with her family, told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser that the bay was a treasured place.

Kathy Emery, who evacuated from her 5-acre farm in Kapoho, said she doesn't know if she has a home to go back to.

The tallest ash plume at the summit of Kilauea volcano reached 30,000 feet above sea level, the USGS says. She said it would be some time before precise losses were confirmed. He told reporters that there is still plenty of shelter space but that state officials are working with federal counterparts to work on a plan for housing people who've lost their homes to the lava.

Thousands have been evacuated from the area, but officials fear that up to a dozen residents who chose to stay could be dead.
