Simona Halep and Garbine Muguruza set up semi-final; Nadal in limbo

French Open 2018: Simona Halep vs Angelique Kerber - live score updates French Open: Sharapova dumped out by clinical Muguruza

A lot of eyes were on Maria Sharapova as she continued her comeback tour, but it was Simona Halep and Garbine Muguruza who showcased their skill with quarterfinal wins on Day 11.

Halep went from out-of-sorts to on-target against Kerber, scrambling to every ball and staying the course to erase an early deficit. After 2 hours and 14 minutes, Halep rallied past the 12th-seeded Kerber 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-2 and reached the French Open semifinals for the third time.

"I have actually been told quite often that I'll never win or do well because I'm too nice of a person and I just don't have it", Keys said. I think everything will be normal. "My head won it", Halep said.

In her 31st non-consecutive week as the world No.1, Halep will face Garbine Muguruza to defend the top spot in the semifinals.

Muguruza, who is 3-1 against the No. 1-seeded Halep in her career, has never squared off with her in a Grand Slam. The victor earns a berth in the final at Roland Garros, plus the number one ranking that now belongs to Halep.

"I was up against a great player so I had make sure I brought my best tennis". Sharapova had 27 unforced errors and had her serve broken six times.

"When you're writing an autobiography, I don't think there is any reason to write anything that's not true", said Sharapova.

Sharapova didn't need to play a point in the fourth round, because Serena Williams pulled out of their much-anticipated match with an injured chest muscle. She clearly still has business to attend to as she eyes a follow-up to her 2016 title on the Parisian clay.

Though Kerber, sensing a pendulum swing, cut her passive play out and began to construct her most aggressive points of the match, Halep would be able to protect that advantage throughout the set.

Keys made it to the semis with a straight-sets win over Kazakhstan's Yulia Putintseva while reigning US Open champion Stephens eased past Russia's Daria Kasatkina.

The last French woman to win a singles Grand Slam title was Marion Bartoli, when she won Wimbledon five years ago.

Muguruza advanced in the fourth round when Lesia Tsurenko retired after just two games, but her recent run has still been impressive with only five lost games in her last three rounds, including a 6-0, 6-2 win over Samantha Stosur in Round 3. "I missed a lot at the beginning of the match".

Such impressive data from this match has led to Muguruza being chalked up as a [1.89] favourite over Halep, and I want to discuss why I think this is an utterly freaky line. If she can channel that same degree of aplomb and expertise in the semi, Halep doesn't have much of a chance.

On whether Williams's late withdrawal in the previous round had derailed her momentum in the tournament she said: 'I didn't really know what to do. She was prior to the draw and it took a gift draw for Elina Svitolina - which the Ukrainian was unable to exploit - for her to lose this status for the opening two rounds.
