Amazon's Prime Video service has bought the rights for two entire rounds of fixtures live each season in Britain in a three-year deal from 2019, representing 20 games each season.

"Prime Video will be an excellent service on which fans can consume live Premier League football - including for the first time in the United Kingdom a full round of matches - and we look forward to working with them from season 2019-20 onwards".

This isn't the first time Amazon has dipped its toe in broadcasting live sport after having bagged the rights to stream the US Open and ATP World Tour tennis tournaments, as well as select National Football League matches. The matches will be across two rounds of fixtures - the first December midweek round of matches, and all the fixtures on Boxing Day.

The US tech giant will show 20 matches a season for three years after buying one of the final two remaining packages at an undisclosed cost.

BT Sport bought the other to add to the giant package they already purchased, when they and Sky Sports spent £4.5billion between them on 160 games.

Football matches on Amazon will only be available to Amazon Prime customers, for which membership now costs £7.99 a month or £79 a year.

In February, Sky paid £3.579bn for four packages, while BT Sport shelled out £295m on another as the pair went head-to-head. In Amazon's deal with the National Football League, the games Amazon streamed also aired on U.S. free-to-air TV.

Subscription channel Premier Sports will screen 33 Premier League games in the Saturday afternoon slot, with another 20 matches also being shown on the platform.

Following confirmation of the Amazon deal, the Premier League have been criticised on social media for adding a third network to their list of television subscribers, with fans now being asked to pay approaching €100-a-month to watch all live matches.

The Premier League is the richest in Europe, according to a report published this week by Deloitte.

The online retail behemoth and streaming service becomes the first over-the-top streaming service to successfully bid for exclusive Premier League rights and joins pay-TV rivals Sky and BT in next year's line-up of providers.

Memberships costs £79 (S$140) a year or £7.99 a month.

The best five of the seven United Kingdom broadcast packages for the Premier League were sold in February, with Sky paying £3.75 billion to acquire four, a 14 percent discount on its current deal.

The Amazon deal is good news for the EPL, which will welcome competition after the value of its main rights packages fell this time.

Under the new formula, the maximum a club can receive is 1.8 times the amount received by the lowest-earning club, the Premier League said in a statement.
