U.S. President Donald Trump told Group of Seven leaders that the United States wanted a quick end to trade practices that he says have led to an exodus of American companies and jobs to other countries.

At a news conference to close the summit of world leaders in Canada, Mr Trudeau said the people of his country would see the U.S. president's line on trade as "an insult" after a long history of cooperation between the countries.

Trump called for Russia's reinstatement to the group before he arrived at the annual summit taking place in Quebec.

Trump has also feuded on Twitter this week with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and French President Emmanuel Macron, who are both attending this year's summit.

"Very dishonest & weak", Trump said, adding that recently imposed USA tariffs on imports of Canadian steel and aluminium were in response to similar measures imposed on American dairy products by Canada.

He continued: "What we did this weekend was come together and roll up our sleeves and figure out consensus language that we could all agree to on a broad range of issues".

"There will be subjects on which the (US) president is not totally in sync with the others I'm thinking of course of climate change and trade", the French leader said. The president also referred to Trudeau's "false statements", which he didn't explain.

Trump's reversal, announced while he was en route to Singapore for a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, sent his G7 partners scrambling. "Canada can't believe they got away with it", Mr. Trump said. Trump will likely have to meet all of them again, with the exception of Paolo Gentiloni, who is no longer Italian Prime Minister.

The Trump administration has also been engaged in contentious talks with Canada and Mexico to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

On Friday, European Council President Donald Tusk said Trump's criticism of the worldwide rules-based order is "playing into the hands of those who seek a new post-West order where liberal democracy and fundamental freedoms would cease to exist".

"Obama can say all he wants but he allowed Russian Federation to take Crimea", Trump added.

He said he didn't blame the other world leaders, saying their countries struck good deals at America's expense, and said he blamed previous USA presidents.

"In this environment, above all we always have to stay polite, stay productive and try to convince (them) to keep the United States on board because they are our historical ally and we need them", Macron told a news conference with Trudeau in Ottawa.

"People can't charge us 270% and we charge them nothing".

"I would say that the level of relationship is a 10".

He said he suggested cutting all of the tariffs, duties and even government subsidies among the G7 countries, and said other leaders would "go back to the drawing board and check it out".

Trump said the G7 leaders were united in their approach to the "threat of Iran" and committed to controlling the country's "nuclear ambitions".

The summit came during an ongoing trade dispute with China and served as a precursor to his unprecedented meeting with Kim, in which he has sought to extend a hand to the Asian autocrat who has long bedeviled the worldwide order. The statement had been published online before Trump commented.

Still, the United States and European Union will establish a dialogue on trade within the next two weeks, signaling a modest step forward for the bitterly divided allies of the G7.

"We Europeans and the Japanese are not ready to give up everything to get" Trump's signature, he said, adding that would be a "mistake".
