Israeli drone targets ‘fire kite’ sites in eastern Gaza United Nations condemns excessive Israeli force against Palestinians

The UN General Assembly on Wednesday adopted by a strong majority of 120 countries an Arab-backed resolution condemning Israel for Palestinian deaths in Gaza and rejected a USA bid to blame Hamas for the violence.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas welcomed the passing of a U.N. General Assembly resolution on protecting the Palestinian people which was adopted Wednesday with a majority of votes.

In a last-ditch effort to thwart the U.N. resolution, the United States tried to ram through an amendment blaming Hamas for initiating violence in the Gaza Strip. A similar Security Council resolution was vetoed earlier this month by the United States for being "fundamentally imbalanced" and "grossly one-sided", U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley said.

Australia, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Solomon Islands and Togo joined Israel and the United States in voting against the resolution, which came weeks after Washington vetoed a similar resolution in the 15-member UN Security Council.

The text also "deplores the firing of rockets from the Gaza Strip against Israeli civilian areas", but does not single out Hamas as being responsible for such launches.

At least 130 Palestinians have been killed and 13,900 others wounded by Israeli forces over the past few weeks, according to the latest figures released by the Gaza Health Ministry.

Hamas has also billed the protests as the "Great March of Return", suggesting they would somehow pave the way for a return of Palestinian refugees and their descendants - about two-thirds of Gaza's residents - to return to ancestral homes in what is now Israel. "That's why we are here today", Haley told the Assembly.

The Israeli military has said its soldiers adhere to the rules of engagement to defend Israeli civilians and security infrastructure from attacks cloaked by the protests.

An amendment presented by the U.S. that condemned Hamas for "inciting violence" along the border with Gaza failed to garner the two-thirds majority needed for adoption. He warned ambassadors that by supporting the resolution "you are empowering Hamas".

Malaysia has welcomed the adoption of a resolution by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) calling for greater protection for Palestinians. Israel and Egypt argue that the blockade is needed to contain Hamas, which has a history of violence and refuses to disarm.

"We will not stop flying our fire kites until the [Israeli] siege of Gaza is lifted", Mohamed, who did not reveal his last name for security reasons, said.
