In a world exclusive interview with Piers Morgan on Good Morning Britain, he also revealed his decision to pull out just three days before the biggest day of Meghan's life left her sobbing - and that he cried on the sofa of a Californian B&B as he watched his "beautiful" daughter marry in Windsor on a small colour TV. He said "give Donald Trump a chance". "They would take pictures of my hand grabbing a beer, they'd take pictures of me getting in my vehicle, taking the garbage out, they'd take pictures of me buying a toilet and making a big deal out of it, they'd take all kinds of pictures of me making me look negative".

Mr Markle said: "I absolutely wanted to walk my daughter down the aisle".

Seeminlgy unfazed by his daughter marrying into the royal family, Thomas said his daughter had "been a princess since the day she was born", adding: "He made a good pick, didn't he?".

"Watching it was hard for me, because I wasn't there, but at the same time I'm watching my daughter being watched by the entire world".

"At that point she said, 'It's Harry.' And I said, 'Oh Harry, okay.' And she said, 'Of course, we'll have to call him H so no-one knows we're talking about Harry. That upsets me somewhat". I was very happy about that.

Speaking about missing the opportunity of walking his daughter down the aisle, Thomas admits he was very jealous but also thankful that Prince Harry's father Charles was there to do it.

"I can't think of a better replacement than someone like Prince Charles", he told the programme.

Meghan's father went on to recall how Harry asked for his daughter's hand in marriage before news of the couple's engagement broke last fall.

When asked about their Brexit discussion, he said: "It was just a loose conversation".

It remains to be seen if Harry and Meghan - or Charles - will speak to Thomas again anytime soon.

Mr Markle described Prince Harry as a "great. interesting guy" and revealed they had held conversations about politics, including Donald Trump's presidency, as well as Brexit. "I think he [the Duke of Sussex] was open to the experiment".

"I spoke to them both and I apologised. And I said, 'That's really nice.' And then the next call was like, 'He's British.' And I said, 'That's really nice.' And eventually the third time round was, 'He's a prince, '" Markle said. "It was incredible watching her".
