Paul Manafort to remain in jail until trial

Judge jails ex-Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort pending trial, citing obstruction charges At long last, Paul Manafort is heading to prison

Speaking to reporters at the White House on Friday, Trump insisted that Manafort only worked on the campaign "for a very short period of time".

Manafort faced arraignment Friday on the obstruction counts and is set for trial in Washington in September over the allegations of secret lobbying.

In a superseding indictment, the prosecutors claimed that Manafort and a close associate, Konstantin V. Kilimnik, had contacted the two witnesses this year, hoping to persuade them to testify that Manafort had never lobbied in the United States for Viktor F. Yanukovych, the pro-Moscow President of Ukraine who fled to Russian Federation in 2014 after a popular uprising. I thought about this long and hard, Mr. Manafort.

The judge said Manafort abused the trust placed in him, adding: "This isn't middle school.I can't take your phone".

Mueller´s filing said he may also introduce evidence showing that Manafort falsely represented business expenses on his tax returns and that Manafort, his business partner Richard Gates and Kilimnik structured loans between Cypriot companies they controlled to avoid recognizing those funds as taxable income.

The distinction matters because unregistered foreign lobbying in the U.S.is a crime, while lobbying exclusively in Europe would be outside the special counsel's jurisdiction.

A Manafort associate, Konstantin Kilimnik, also was charged with obstruction in connection with alleged approaches to witnesses.

Paul Manafort departs Federal District Court after a hearing, Thursday, April 19, 2018, in Washington. "I struggled with this decision", Jackson said.

Manafort entered a not guilty plea to charges for witness tampering and conspiracy to obstruct justice.

Mueller, whose investigation could threaten Trump's presidency, is also investigating whether the president's 2016 campaign colluded with Moscow and whether Trump has unlawfully sought to obstruct the Russian Federation probe.

Prosecutors argued on Friday that Manafort could continue to engage in alleged criminal activity if he is not jailed.

Andres said Manafort had carried out a "sustained campaign" over five weeks to influence the witnesses' testimony, which he said was part of Manafort's "history of deception in this case".

Trump says in a tweet he "didn't know Manafort was the head of the Mob" and asks, "What about Comey and Crooked Hillary and all of the others?"

Manafort's lawyers have accused prosecutors of conjuring a "sinister plot" out of "innocuous" contacts.

Kilimnik, whom USA authorities suspect of having ties to Russian intelligence, served as Manafort's point man in Ukraine.

Manafort has repeatedly declared his intention to fight the charges in both jurisdictions, with his attorneys saying that he is being wrongly prosecuted for financial activities that have nothing to do with Russian interference in the 2016 election, the main focus of Mueller's investigation.
