DHS: Nearly 2000 Children Separated From Adults At Border In Six Weeks

1,995 minors separated from adults during six-week period, DHS says About 2,000 children separated from families at U.S. border: DHS

Almost 2,000 children were separated from their families over a six-week period in April and May after Sessions announced the new "zero-tolerance" policy that refers all cases of illegal entry for criminal prosecution.

The Department of Homeland Security confirmed new numbers that estimate that over 2,000 children have been separated from their parents or caretakers at the U.S. -Mexico border.

Crossing the border between official ports of entry is and has always been illegal, according to U.S. Code § 1325. The lack of measurable impact on immigration lends weight to questions about the policy's effectiveness, going beyond moral issues raised by the policy's critics.

A bipartisan group of more than 70 former U.S. attorneys are calling on Attorney General Jeff Sessions to reverse the Trump administration's policy of prosecuting all people who cross the border illegally, saying it is "dangerous, expensive, and inconsistent" with the values of the Justice Department.

"We do not have a policy of separating families at the border".

"You play a critical part in fulfilling these goals, and I thank you for your continued efforts in seeing to it that our laws-and as a result, our nation-are respected", Sessions said in the memo.

Greenberg says the separations make it more hard for ORR to place the children "because their parents are being incarcerated or otherwise held".

When it came to Sarah Huckabee Sanders backing Sessions up saying that people should follow the law, Oliver again exclaimed "not a f*cking law!"

Also in the proposal are provisions to protect 1.8 million Daca "Dreamers", eliminate the diversity lottery, and add $25bn for border security.

But Friday, DHS said unlike previous years, it is no longer exempting classes of people from being prosecuted for crossing the border.

At an event in Indiana, Mr Sessions was defending the practice of separating undocumented immigrant families apprehended at the border.

Democrat Senators are attempting to drum up support in Congress to legislate against the policy, including proposing a law that would ban the practice.

"Our government has the discretion in our laws to ensure that young children are not separated from their parents and exposed to irreparable harm and trauma".

O'Rourke also noted that the policy meant children would spend Father's Day uncertain when they would next see their parents.

On a conference call with reporters on Friday, Department of Homeland Security officials told reporters that prosecutions have more than doubled, but acknowledges they are not now at 100 percent.

"Romans 13 is possibly the worst Bible passage to bring up since it was regularly invoked in Civil War times by defenders of slavery", Oliver said.

"I hate the children being taken away", Trump said from the White House lawn.
