In addition to speculating that Chinese and Russian support for existing USA -led sanctions against Pyongyang is likely to falter since Mr. Trump tweeted a day after meeting Mr. Kim that "there is no longer a Nuclear Threat from North Korea", critics have seized on a lack of specifics in the joint statement.

Mr Kim's current visit to Beijing is his third to China within three months.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un (L) with US President Donald Trump (R) at the end of the US-DPRK summit at the Capella Hotel on Sentosa island on June 12, 2018 in Singapore.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was back in Beijing this week, speaking with Chinese officials over his historic summit with President Trump and the possible denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.

Has North Korea won vital support from China before the Trump summit?

"The governments of South Korea and China share the same strategic goal of completely denuclearizing the Korean peninsula", stated Noh Kyu-Duk, Foreign Ministry spokesman for South Korea.

Kim Jong-un's latest trip to China has also sparked speculations that sanctions imposed by Beijing may be discussed.

"This is the Chinese way", said Hwang Jae-ho, a China expert at Seoul's Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, who was also traveling to China for meetings with his Chinese counterparts on the same day.

Pyongyang has long considered the drills as acts of aggression toward the nation, and other nearby countries including China have called for their halt.

Will the Singapore summit be the beginning of a new era?

Park Ihn-hwi, an global studies professor at Ewha Womans University in Seoul, said, however, that North Korea would want economic incentives before committing to complete denuclearisation.

He has been expected to visit the country to brief Chinese President Xi Jinping on his meeting with the USA president.

North Korea is estimated to have thousands of massive artillery guns hidden in hardened shelters among the hills and mountains of the country's rugged terrain.

Amid fears the summit would weaken the global coalition against the North's nuclear programme, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo stressed after the meeting that sanctions would remain in place until North Korea's complete denuclearisation.

Kim praised China's "important role in protecting the Korean Peninsula's peace and stability", state-run CCTV said.

Kim told Xi he hoped to work with China and other parties to push the peace process, Chinese state television said.

During a joint press conference with Pompeo, Wang said China would like the United States and North Korea to see the summit as?a new starting point? from which they can?maintain a momentum of dialogue and consultation, accommodate each other's legitimate concerns, and work with other parties to advance the process of denuclearisation and the political settlement of the peninsula issue?.

Tuesday's visit shows that China is "key" to the talks, the analyst added.

The Pentagon has yet to publicly release the cost of previous and future joint military exercises with South Korea, a week after Trump cited their "tremendously expensive" cost as a reason for halting them.

This week's visit would likely see Beijing reward Kim for his recent diplomatic overtures, Xie continued.

Beijing has repeatedly called for a "suspension for suspension" approach where the North would stop its nuclear and missile tests in exchange for the United States and South Korea halting military exercises.
