Instagram Introduces IGTV for Long-Form ‘Vertical Format’ Video

Ginger Lopez | 21 June, 2018, 20:40

This has been in the works for quite some time, and it arrives five years after Instagram officially welcomed video onto the platform. The Facebook-owned company also announced that Instagram now has one billion users globally.

This may be an attempt on Instagram's part to steel a bit of YouTube's thunder, in that it enables users to upload longer and more involved video content, but just like the main app, IGTV is obviously a mobile-first effort.

IGTV is a new app for watching long-form vertical video from Instagram creators. With the new app, users will be able to make their posts and share them alongside the usual posts and stories from within Instagram by clicking on a button on the home screen or on the standalone IGTV app.

"When people browse through the feed they don't want to stop and watch a 10-minute video", Systrom says.

Instagram, which had some 800 million users as of September, has been outpacing rival social networks such as Twitter and Snapchat and has been gaining younger users even as Facebook itself has seen declines in the youth segment.

Up until now, video uploads were limited to just one minute on Instagram, but IGTV extends that limit to an hour. The videos will be smartphone-ready with a vertical orientation, and will be available in up to 4K resolution. Viewing the videos is also possible within the Instagram app as well.

Instagram also takes up some space on their official website unveiling the new IGTV on how this impacts businesses, as it leverages its huge user base.

Long-form vertical video! Here we are. Yesterday, a Facebook executive told Recode it would start running autoplay video ads in Messenger, another property launched as a kind of spinoff-app, this week.
