LONDON, ENGLAND - APRIL 19: JNew Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern (L) arrives to attend The Queen's Dinner during The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) at Buckingham Palace on April 19, 2018 in London, England.

"We're all doing really well", she wrote.

"Natalie and I are delighted for Jacinda and Clarke", he said.

There was no mention of a name, although Ms Ardern earlier warned the couple were struggling to pick one.

The 37-year-old worked right up until she went into labour, but she is expected to take maternity leave.

"We had been told that it was unlikely that we would be able to have a family without help", she told Sky News.

There is no blueprint but the offices of Ms Ardern and Winston Peters have been at pains to play down the handover as "business as usual" in the weeks leading up to the birth.

Benazir Bhutto gave birth while serving as Pakistan's prime minister in 1990, in a totally different political climate, where her opponents used her pregnancy as a reason to demand her dismissal.

"But this is news that Jacinda wanted to share with New Zealand, and for it to be part of New Zealand, and I think her and Clarke have managed to do just that". "It was a week before (Deputy Prime Minister) Winston Peters made his decision about how to form a coalition government....so it's been a long time to carry that secret".

Ms Ardern has said she plans to return to work at the beginning of August.

Offering his congratulations, New Zealand opposition leader Simon Bridges said: 'Being parents is a joy and a privilege and we are sure your new arrival will fill your lives with all the happiness our children have ours.

An instagram of the baby captioned "Welcome to our village wee one", had reached 10,000 likes after just a few minutes.

The politician is only the second elected leader in recent history to give birth in office.

Ardern and her partner knew the sex of the child, but wanted to keep it out of the public eye until it was born.

Ardern plans on taking six weeks of maternity leave. "Plenty of women have multitasked before me, and I want to acknowledge that", she said when revealing the pregnancy in January.
