The EU's reactive charges on €2.8bn (£2.4bn) worth of USA goods came into force on Friday morning, with European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker slamming the White House for acting against "all logic and history". "The U.S.is abusing the tariff methods and starting trade wars all around the world".

The European Union retaliated against President Trump's steel and aluminum tariffs Friday with tariffs on about $3.3 billion worth of American goods, including bourbon, orange juice, peanut butter, and motorcycles.

Canada said its tariffs of up to 25% on almost $13 billion of American products will take effect on July 1.

"The trade that we believe in is built on rules, trust and reliable partnership", President Jean-Claude Juncker said in a speech in Dublin last night.

The tariffs will hit $3.2 billion in US imports to the European Union.

Other countries hit by the United States tariffs have also retaliated, raising fears of a global trade war. India and Turkey have already targeted USA products, ranging from rice to autos to sunscreen.

The tariffs, which will hit American products including motorcycles and denim, are a response to Trump administration tariffs on steel and aluminum exports from Europe. Trump has threatened to impose new taxes on European and other imported cars - an idea that caught many by surprise, because domestic automakers GM and Ford have been thriving, and foreign companies such as BMW, Toyota and Honda now have large plants in the U.S.

In trade wars, there tend to many casualties and few winners.

The Trump administration this week ratcheted up its accusations that China's trade and intellectual property practices are threatening United States economic interests.

The U.S. Trade Representative said in April that the United States' trade deficit with India had fallen to $23 billion in 2017, a 6 percent decrease, as U.S. goods exported to India rose almost $26 billion, up 18 percent from the previous year.

The Chinese have said they will respond in kind.
