Terming yoga as the unifying force of the world, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday led thousands of yoga enthusiasts in performing asanas in Uttarakhand's Dehradun.

The Prime Minister said in just three years the International Yoga Day has grown into a worldwide public movement and become an integral part of public life in many countries.

"Yoga fosters amity in societies which can form the basis of national unity", the Prime Minister said. Modi said that the way to lead a calm, creative and content life was yoga.

The celebrations began with the screening of a video message of the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President M Abdul Hamid.

It is born of an "awareness of the unsatisfactory character of the human condition", says India specialist Tara Michael, author of the book "Yoga" published in France in 1980.

Addressing the event, the Minister said the discipline of yoga helps to maintain a healthy and attractive life.

Yoga is attractive because it is ancient yet modern, it is constant yet evolving. The Bharathidasan University observed the day with training sessions on yoga and meditation.

"Designed to help individuals build self-realisation, ease any suffering they may be experiencing and allow for a state of liberation, (yoga) is practised by the young and old without discriminating against gender, class or religion", UNESCO added in a tweet. A research exercise was undertaken on the spot by all present to introspect on reasons for not adopting yoga in their daily routine, said the statement.

The growing popularity of yoga across the globe had brought India closer to the world and this position is going to get strengthened in times to come, he said.

Demonstration of yoga asanas were also performed by yoga students of the IGCC and other yoga institutes in Dhaka. "Instead of dividing, Yoga unites". The UN General Assembly declared June 21 as the International Yoga Day in 2014.

He added that several people, who already practice yoga, re-dedicate themselves to its pursuit on this day.

Yoga means addition - addition of energy, strength and beauty to body, mind and soul. Breath is the most handsome gift and yoga makes people realize that. Indian Vice-Presidentt M Venkaiah Naidu participated in a event that took place in Mumbai along with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Nor is yoga only what you practice in the morning.
