The rally, which typically marks the start of a month of events commemorating the 1950-53 Korean war and denouncing the USA, has been held for years and last year attracted 100,000 people in the capital, Pyongyang.

He has said Washington hopes to achieve major disarmament by North Korea within the next two and a half years, during Trump's current presidential term.

Officials agreed to permit a reunion of 100 separated family members to meet on August 20 to 26 at the Mount Kumgang area in North Korea.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un shakes hands with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in this May 9, 2018 photo released on May 10, 2018 by North Korea's Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) in Pyongyang.

Children are indoctrinated to beware of Americans, and while the Kim regime is talking less about the need for nuclear weapons, it's said little about denuclearization - the action the USA wants.

Pompeo told CNN that instead he would "assess" the North Korean regime's promise to take steps toward "complete denuclearization" as the USA has suspended military drills on the peninsula.

North Korean state media have shown many reports, photographs and videos of the recent meeting between the country's leader and the USA president.

Pompeo, who has been charged with leading negotiations aimed at persuading North Korea to give up a nuclear weapons program that threatens the United States, said he would "constantly reassess" whether enough progress was being made to continue talks.

Pompeo himself told reporters the day after the Singapore summit Washington hoped to achieve "major disarmament" by North Korea within Trump's current term, which ends on January 20, 2021.

The US is sending 215 coffins to North Korea to bring back the remains of American soldiers in a follow-up to a summit agreement between Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un.

The meeting concluded with the signing of a joint document between the two leaders, outlining their commitment to the complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula.

Referring to Trump's decision to suspend joint military exercises with South Korea, Pompeo told CNN this move would last "only so long as there is a good faith negotiation progress, productive results being achieved".

Mattis will also push for more regional security cooperation from China by pointing out that the suspension of USA military exercises with South Korea satisfies a major Chinese strategic objective, which is the real reason China has insisted so strongly on its "freeze-for-freeze" plan that made suspension of American exercises a precondition for nuclear talks with North Korea.

Less than two weeks after the summit, Pompeo suggested it was too soon to expect a detailed roadmap after 40 years of tensions between the two countries.
