Saudi Arabia pulled off a last-gasp 2-1 win over Egypt as the two sides departed from the tournament on Monday (June 25), adding to the misery of Egypt's prolific striker Mohamed Salah and giving the Saudis their first victory at a World Cup since 1994.

El Hadary made his Egypt debut in 1996, 10 months before the youngest player in Egypt's World Cup squad, Ramadan Sobhi, was born and has now earned his 159th cap.

Although he gave up the two goals, he also saved a penalty in the first half.

Salem Aldawsari scored the victor for the Saudis with nearly the last kick of the match, volleying past El Hadary from a tight angle inside the Egypt penalty area.

Egypt will crash out of the World Cup regardless of their result against Saudi Arabia.

Nonetheless, Egypt's hordes of supporters roared on Salah whenever he got near the ball and he opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when he raced on to Abdallah Said's long pass and kept his cool to lob Saudi goalkeeper Yasser Al-Mosailem.

The Pharaohs went out of the tournament with a whimper as they crashed to a 2-1 defeat to Saudi Arabia, meaning they leave Russian Federation without a point from their three group games.

Salah explained the team's situation citing that this is their first World Cup in 28 years, and that most of the players are young.

Almuwallad had earlier missed a chance to equalize when El Hadary saved his penalty.

However, he could do nothing about a second penalty awarded to Saudi Arabia and was beaten by Salman Al-Faraj.

El Hadary overtook Faryd Mondragon as the oldest person to play at the World Cup.

History-making keeper Essam El Hadary has apologised to his nation for Egypt's exit despite saving a penalty in their 2-1 loss to Saudi Arabia. The Colombia goalkeeper was 43 when he came on as a late substitute in his team's 4-1 victory over Japan four years ago at the World Cup in Brazil.
