Apple will upgrade AirPods and release over-head

Bloomberg: Premium AirPods, next-gen HomePod and new over-ear Apple headphones coming in 2019 Bloomberg report reveals three new Apple products launching next year

Apple might be upgrading its headphone lineup in a big way next year with a new, high-end version of its wireless AirPods headphones with noise cancellation and water resistant technology and a (previously rumored) over-ear model, according to a report from Bloomberg. In their effort to add multiple uses to pretty much all their products, they've also reportedly had internal discussions to add fitness-related components to the pods including biometric sensors, like a heart rate monitor.

The report also notes that the current AirPods are set to get a slight revamp this year, with a new chip and hands-free "Hey Siri" support, however it's not certain whether production will continue to be provided by Inventec Corp, notes 9to5Mac. A new report coming from Bloomberg now talks about a couple of new features that one can expect from the upcoming wireless earphones.

Slated for 2019, the earbuds were likely to cost more than the existing $159 pair, and that could push Apple to segment the product line like it did with iPhones, the people said. Although no name for the headphones has yet leaked, they're expected to launch at some point in 2019. They are said to offer improved sound quality. Apple is reportedly in talks with audio systems manufacturer Tymphany for the over-ear headphones, though both companies have yet to close any deal, according to the report. It also predicts a delay in the release of the aforementioned over-ear model which was initially believed to be due for release by the end of this year.

They're not ideal, but for a first generation product, they're pretty good. They'll utilize Apple branding and be positioned as a higher-end alternative to the company's Beats line. A spokesperson for Apple declined to comment on the leaked information. The report suggests all three new products will land in 2019, with two potentially launching in the first half of next year.

Of course, Apple-owned Beats already produces a wide range of over-ear headphones. An Inventec spokeswoman said the company "will try its best to secure new orders".
