Protests planned nationwide over Trump immigration policy

WASHINGTON DC- JUNE 28 Protesters march from Freedom Plaza to demonstrate against family detentions and to demand the end of criminalizing efforts of asylum seekers and immigrants Hundreds of women in D.C. protest ‘zero-tolerance’ immigration policy

Capitol Police say they have arrested about 575 people protesting President Trump's immigration policy at the Senate office building.

Hundreds of women, wrapped in metallic silver blankets, referencing the duvets given to migrant children in detention centers, occupied the Senate office building in Washington DC after marching down the streets of the city chanting "Shame!" Rep. Pramila Jayapal was one of those who were detained on Thursday, before being released with a fine.

Jayapal said she was with a group of over 500 women when she got arrested. Not in our country.

"This is far beyond politics", she said. Logically, these people were also protesting the rule of law as well as strong border security - which is enforced to keep all Americans (including the protesters themselves) safe on an everyday basis. "#WomenDisobey", the Hollywood star tweeted. The rallies are likely to get a further boost as a result of the announcement on Wednesday by Anthony Kennedy that he is retiring from the United States supreme court, providing Trump with the chance to make a second ultra-conservative appointment to the nation's highest court and prompting fears of a roll-back of liberal protections.

Saturday's rallies are the latest in a series of protests against the Trump administration's immigration policies.

630 women sat on the floor of the building's atrium in protest of the Trump administration's "zero-tolerance" policy that has separated families and has caused mass incarceration at the southern border.

President Trump responded to the recent Democrat backlash in a rally from North Dakota on Wednesday.

"What the administration is doing right now is morally wrong, it is inhumane and it has to stop", Gillibrand said.
