Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D., N.Y.) said Thursday the upcoming fight over President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee was about whether the country would "criminalize women". "And I'm going to try and do something like that, but I don't think I'm going to be so specific".

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told a GOP gathering in Kentucky that the goal is to wrap up the confirmation in time for the nominee to join the court at the start of its next term in October.

Asked about Mr. Lee, the president said, "He said he'd like the job".

A new poll Friday found 67 percent of Americans are opposed to rolling back the landmark 1973 Supreme Court decision that guarantees a woman's right to an abortion.

Supreme Court vacancies have become a key voting issue in the USA presidential election. Trump will announce his pick to replace Kennedy on July 9. Nominated by Republican President Ronald Reagan and confirmed in 1988, Kennedy is widely thought to be a moderate and pivotal swing vote on the court.

Kennedy's retirement will give Trump the opportunity to appoint his second justice and reshape the nation's highest court for generations.

Many liberals fear that with Kennedy gone, a Trump replacement will ensure that eventually Roe v. Wade will be overturned. Neither senator is known for telegraphing how they will cast their votes until right before the vote is called, so the spotlight will likely be on them in the months ahead. And at least three Democrats facing reelection in states that Trump won may be willing to break with their party, too.

"We'd be very happy if he'd pick any name on that list", said Severino.

White House aides said other names are in the mix as well.

Leonard Leo, an outside legal activist, will be another key member of the president's advisory team, sources said.

For Republicans' part, they need to balance actively campaigning against the trio in 2018, while courting their votes for the Supreme Court nominee. "And that'll happen automatically, in my opinion, because I am putting pro-life justices on the court". Red-state Democrats are generally loathe to make their campaigns about social issues, and Heitkamp has preferred to work with the Trump administration on economic and energy grounds.

Like Collins and Murkowski, these Democrats are unlikely to reveal how they will vote until the nomination comes to the Senate floor. "This is a line that's been drawn about whether we are going to criminalize women, whether we are going to be arresting women for making decisions about their bodies".
