Capital Gazette Journalist to be Remembered, Paper Gets Threats

Morning after mass shooting, Capital Gazette publishes Friday edition Capital Gazette shooting: Obsessive, grudge-filled Twitter account finally gets pulled

"The terror and violence that we saw at Capital Gazette is another disgusting example why our laws need to be updated to reflect modern-day crime", said Rep. Katherine Clark, D-Mass., who has been pushing for years to bolster federal online harassment laws and increase cybertraining for police departments around the country.

An attorney for the paper showed cops a trove of tweets in which Ramos "makes mention of blood in the water, journalist hell, hit man, open season, glad there won't be murderous rampage, murder career".

Later, in 2015, Ramos tweeted that he would like to see the paper stop publishing, but "it would be nicer" to see two of its journalists "cease breathing".

The alleged shooter, identified as 38-year-old Jarrod Ramos, filed a defamation lawsuit against Capital Gazette Communications, including a columnist and editor there, in 2012 after they covered his 2011 guilty plea for criminally harassing "Lori".

Tom Marquardt, the newspaper's former editor and publisher, told NPR Ramos's behavior disturbed him enough to contact police in 2013. "His intent was to cause harm", he said.

Ramos nearly regularly posted about wanting members of the staff to kill themselves, hoping the paper would shut down and would repeatedly include the hashtag #CapDeathWatch. With an extensive family in the area, including 19 nieces and nephews, McCarthy constantly anxious that Ramos might come after one of them.

President Donald Trump called the attack a "horrible event". Shortly before the shooting on Thursday, it posted a message: "F-- you, leave me alone". The last few days have been hard for everybody in the newspaper industry. Pat Furgurson, a reporter, told the Guardian that the victims were "just trying to do their job for the public".

"We have a bad guy and for his own reasons, he chose to do what he did". The newspaper decided not to pursue criminal charges because it might exacerbate the situation, Anne Arundel County Police Chief Timothy Altomare said Friday during a news conference.

As the Sun reported: "As of 2016, as many as 6,000 or 7,000 law enforcement officials had access to the database".

"His statements may be defamatory, they may be libelous, they may be obnoxious". Two other people were injured. One source told Salon that the shooting itself was not politically motivated but that Ramos had been personally influence by the so-called "alt-right". But Twitter, Ramos' apparent platform of choice, has always been dogged by rampant abuse problems.

Court records show a man charged with killing five people at a Maryland newspaper was sacked from a government IT contractor because of concerns about his "suitability". "I was extremely scared that he was going to do something to me and my family".

The editor of The Montclair Times, a weekly newspaper that has since been acquired by Gannett, did not return a request for comment. "I was afraid he could show up at any point, any place. and kill me".

As the New York Post reports, a reporter from the Baltimore station WBAL-TV said that a woman who had allegedly been stalked by Ramos warned police years ago of his potential for violence.

Gillespie said he heard a colleague scream, "No!" Only hours after the shooting, a Capital Gazette reporter tweeted: "I can tell you this: We are putting out a damn paper tomorrow". It reveals a fundamental failure to understand what defamation law is and more particularly, what defamation law is not. In past years, Ramos repeatedly targeted staffers with angry, profanity-laced tweets. Clark said cybercrime has simply been a lower priority for federal prosecutors.

The Sun, headlining Trump's response to the massacre, wrote Friday: "Trump, who calls journalists 'enemy of the people, ' offers support after Capital Gazette shootings".

A man with the same name as the main suspect filed a lawsuit against the newspaper in 2011, accusing it of defaming him in a column. The U.S. attorney for MA, however, declined to prosecute.
