Scott released a video ad Monday that deemed the Democrat a "rubber stamp" for President Barack Obama's judicial nominees and noted that he "voted against Supreme Court Justice [Neil] Gorsuch." referring to Trump's 2017 appointee.

Trump is thought now to be looking for a candidate whose conservative credentials will please his political base and who is young enough to serve on the high court for decades. Trump has said he plans to announce a nominee July 9.

"One of the few ways that a Trump nominee could fail to be confirmed is if you get one of the two - here they are on the screen, if you lose one of the two Republican senators, Susan Collins or Lisa Murkowski, were both pro-choice".

The president spent the weekend at his Bedminster golf club, consulting with advisers, including White House counsel Don McGahn, as he considers his options to fill the vacancy with a justice who has the potential to be part of precedent-shattering court decisions on abortion, health care, gay marriage and other issues.

"The bottom line: Judge Barrett has given every indication that she will be an activist judge on the court", Schumer said. On Monday, Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, D-N.Y. criticized the record of U.S. Appeals Court Judge Amy Coney Barrett of IN, who is one of seven judges considered to be front-runners. Even though McConnell changed Senate rules a year ago to allow confirmation by simple majority, if Democrats hold together, he can not afford defections.

Justin Clark, in his position as director of the Office of Public Liaison, will oversee outreach with key constituencies, coalitions, grass-roots organizations and allies, the White House said.

Prior to that, he served in private practice and clerked for Sixth Circuit Court Judge Ralph Guy and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, according to a biography from white House archives.

The Republicans' 51-to-49 majority in the Senate is even closer because of the absence of ailing Senator John McCain of Arizona.

The Maine Republican added that "it would be inappropriate" to ask a judicial nominee how they are going to vote on a future case, including one challenging Roe.

While not discussing many details of her private conversation with the president, Collins told Raddatz she "suggested that he broaden his search beyond the list of 25 nominees", referring to the president's "List of 25" from which he has pledged to pick the new justice. Also of interest are Amul Thapar, who serves on the federal appeals court in Cincinnati; Brett Kavanaugh, a former clerk for Kennedy who serves on the federal appeals court in Washington, D.C.; and Amy Coney Barrett, who serves on the federal appeals court in Chicago.

Collins spoke on ABC and CNN.

And if the votes result in a tie, Vice President Pence will hold the tie-breaking vote-and his anti-abortion stance is well-known.
