A new heat warning system is now in place to warn Nova Scotians when hot and humid weather has the potential to be harmful.

Extreme heat affects everyone, Environment Canada said.

"A cold front will usher in a slightly cooler air mass for (Monday)".

Nighttime will offer some relief each day with temperatures hovering around 20 C. The humidity will stick around though.

The move is part of the federal government's climate change adaptation in expectation of more frequent heat events. The temperature in the city reached 40 C on Wednesday when factoring in the humidity, and the heat is expected to last until Friday. Low temperatures overnight are expected to be in the high teens to low twenties providing little relief from the heat.

The city has also extended hours at eight outdoor pools during the heat wave.

No deaths had been reported for the same period in the neighboring province of Ontario, which has also sizzled under extremely high temperatures.

Heat warnings are issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada to inform the public when air temperature and humidex are forecast to be above a certain criteria for two consecutive days.

Mylene Drouin, the Montreal Regional Director of Public Health, confirmed the deaths were due to heat.

Canada Day was supposed to start out sunny in the morning, turning to a mix of sun and cloud in the afternoon, with a 30 per cent chance of showers. Areas near the lake shores will be cooler.

The Salvation Army was out at Gore Park handing out bottles of water reminding people to heed the warnings and protect themselves, and police have already received a number of calls including one on Appleby Line and Upper Middle Road in Burlington where they rescued a dog from a hot auto where the temperature was 66 degrees.
