Netflix is testing a new Ultra tier that could hurt current users

Netflix could soon announce some changes to its pricing schedule with the addition of a fourth plan Netflix might be on the verge of launching its most expensive plan ever
Ginger Lopez | 05 July, 2018, 06:44

In this scenario, the addition of the Ultra plans would be the same as a price hike for Premium subscribers as they would be forced to upgrade to the new, more expensive tier to maintain the same level of service. The only difference appears to be that it supports High Dynamic Range (HDR) while all other plans on Netflix don't support the feature anymore according to the listing.

The new subscription tier was first discovered by the Italian website TuttoAndroid.

Unfortunately, it looks like the existing basic, standard and premium plans would be effected by the introduction of the ultra plan, losing value for those who share accounts while not decreasing in price.

The Standard tier, with two simultaneous viewers, drops back to just one viewer at a time and Premium drops from four to two viewers.

Users on the premium tier would see their streams halve from four to two and lose access to HDR, but keep 4K viewing.

Cordcutting.com spotted the plan in other European countries, including Germany. This is up from the current top "Premium" tier which costs €13.99 a month.

The three subscription plans Netflix now offers, basic, standard and premium, cost $7.99, $10.99 and $13.99, respectively.

"We continuously test new things at Netflix and these tests typically vary in length of time", Smita Saran, a Netflix spokeswoman, said in an email. Now this plan has not officially launched yet, but Netflix is currently testing it as an option for some subscribers.

It's unclear how far Netflix intends to develop its new tier, though the streaming service has confirmed the tests are taking place. In 2017 we'll see TVs for under $700 with the feature, and fancy monitors for over $1300. However, to do so by removing features from their most loyal customer's packages rather than enticing them to pay more with new innovative feature seems a cynical move.
