The heat-related death toll continues to rise across Quebec as Environment Canada issues a smog and heat warning for today.

A heat wave in Quebec has killed 33 people in the past week as high summer temperatures scorched eastern Canada, officials said Thursday.

Twenty-eight of the deaths were in Montreal, said Marie-Claude Lacasse with the Ministry of Health.

"There are still two days left of particularly hot weather with particularly high humidex levels", Genereux said. About it reports the Montreal Gazette, citing data from the press service of the Minister of health of the province.

Dr David Kaiser, the senior physician at Montreal's public health agency, said that most of those who had died from the heat in Montreal were 65 or older, had histories of health problems or mental illness and had been living without air-conditioning. A high of 23 C is predicted for Friday and cooler temperatures will last through the weekend, into next week.

"What we know is, first they have heat stroke.

Usually these kinds of heat waves last for three, four, five days, but this one lasted for seven days, and that doesn't happen quite often", said Alexandre Parent, a meteorologist with Environment Canada.

Health officials in Quebec this week urged people to drink plenty of water, reduce physical activity, seek out air conditioning, and stay in the shade. Of those who died, 18 were in Montreal, Quebec's largest city, CTV News reported.

Meanwhile, a unsafe heat wave is expected to grip California and parts of the southwest Friday and into the weekend, threatening millions of people and likely fueling existing wildfires in the United States.
