Missouri Attorney General Josh Hawley, who will likely seal his sport to run against McCaskill after an August Republican primary, called the SCOTUS nominee "the defining issue of this campaign". He's also had a hand in Trump's picks for lower courts; the president has gotten a whopping 21 circuit court judges confirmed since taking office and almost all were outsourced to The Federalist Society to fill.

The first two are the top contenders for the position, the report said.

While final nominees will be known only when Mr. Trump makes the announcement, this would be for the second time that Mr. Thapar was not able to make the final cut after being interviewed by Mr. Trump. Just days after his inauguration in January 2017 he nominated the conservative justice Neil Gorsuch to the court.

Before boarding Air Force One en route to Washington, Trump said he was considering four people and that of those under consideration, "you can't go wrong".

"I'm very close to making a decision", Trump said.

Battle lines have been drawn over the future of abortion in America on the eve of President Trump's nomination of a second justice to the United States supreme court that could put the landmark 1973 ruling Roe v Wade in jeopardy.

Asked about the details of the selection process, Trump said he had it down to four people. I think they're all outstanding.

"If we put another two or perhaps three justices on". All but one of the 25 people on the list are members of The Federalist Society, a national organization of conservative lawyers, and there's a clear pattern to judicial nominees being fed by the group: They are young, conservative and have records of being very opposed to abortion rights.

"I'll have a decision made in my mind by Sunday".

Trump had discussed the nomination with Vice President Mike Pence in Bedminster, New Jersey yesterday.
