Seven-times champion Serena beat Bulgarian qualifier Viktoriya Tomova on Centre Court on Wednesday, having opened on Monday against Arantxa Rus on Court One.

"I can't go out and say she is favourite to win the tournament - yet".

"I'm not surprised how impressive she has looked because she is obviously very easy to train", Wilander, who is presenting Eurosport's Game, Schett and Mats, told Reuters.

"I believe in tennis we can market our players, we can try to find a way to market our players better, because that grows the sport", she said.

Five-time champion Venus, 38, turned up the heat after getting off to a rocky start and defeated her world No. 141 opponent in just under two hours, advancing to the third round for the 18th time in her career. I remember in Australia one year she hadn't played and was ranked outside the top 100 and she won. "I do feel that I'm quite good at it and I have a lot to give". I fought as hard as I could.

"I think she played above her level and really raised it and got a little lucky and played well when she needed to".

On Centre Court and Court One - Wimbledon's two biggest stadiums - two women's singles matches, including Venus and seven-time victor Serena, entertained the sell-out crowd in each prestigious arena, alongside only one men's match in each.

She was seeded second in 2017 but succumbed amid high expectations and crashed out in the second round that time.

"Everybody thought maybe I'm going to win".

She said: "This year I tried to not put that much pressure because last year I think I put too much".

However, Tomova could not fend off the second break point she faced, which came on the back of a double fault, firing long to hand Williams the initiative.

Serena's victory followed elder sister Venus' hard-fought battle to see off Romania's Alexandra Dulgheru 4-6 6-0 6-1.

She returned to the All England Club stuck in a rut after losing in the first round of both the Australian and French Opens this year.

Madison Keys celebrated Independence Day by beating Thailand's Luksika Kumkhum as she recorded a 6-4 6-3 victory but British hope Katie Swan's run was emphatically ended by 29th seed Mihaela Buzarnescu.

Serena, seeded 25th after her return from maternity leave, faces France's Kristina Mladenovic or Germany's Tatjana Maria for a place in the last 16.
