Donald Trump nominates Brett Kavanaugh to US Supreme Court position

Pres. Trump: 'Very Close' To Making Final Supreme Court Pick Here Are Trump’s Reported ‘Final Four’ Picks for Supreme Court Justice

Joe Donnelly, West Virginia Sen. Doug Jones of Alabama.

But she is also seen as potentially hard to confirm, given the narrowness of the Senate GOP majority, the previous controversy in her confirmation process when she was nominated for the federal bench a year ago, her lack of a deep judicial record of opinions and her openness to overturning Roe v. Wade.

With Republicans hoping to confirm a justice before the court resumes its session in October, as well as prior to the upcoming midterm congressional election in November, "Trump did not move too fast in naming a nominee", says Trevor Burrus, a research fellow at the Cato Institute's Robert A. Levy Center for Constitutional Studies. If confirmed, Kavanaugh would replace long-serving conservative Justice Anthony Kennedy, who announced his retirement on June 27 at age 81.

Kavanaugh and Barrett had the inside track as of Thursday and Friday, as NPR first reported, but their supporters and opponents have gone after each other through the media and internally to the White House.

"Judge Kavanaugh has impeccable credentials, unsurpassed qualifications, and a proven commitment to equal justice under the law", Trump said as he announced his much-anticipated decision in a prime-time address from the White House.

President Donald Trump will announce his Supreme Court nomination TONIGHT at 9:00pm ET and Fox News Channel is your home for unparalleled coverage.

Judge Kavanaugh, 53, referenced his Catholic faith and evinced an "originalist" view of the law - holding that the Constitution must be interpreted conservatively. He is a fine husband, father, and friend - and a man of the highest integrity.

Kavanaugh, 53, now serves as a judge on the DC Circuit Court of Appeals.

"I will conduct a careful, thorough vetting of the president's nominee to the Supreme Court, as I have done with the five previous Supreme Court justices whom I have considered". Rand Paul of Kentucky had expressed concerns but tweeted that he looked forward to meeting with Kavanaugh "with an open mind". Kavanaugh will need to be confirmed by a majority of the Senate before taking his place as one of the nine Supreme Court justices. "With this nominee, President Trump fulfilled his campaign promise of nominating justices who are hostile to women's reproductive rights".

"This is a nightmare for red-state Democrats to oppose a highly qualified nominee, and all four of these people are highly qualified-been on the court, know what they're doing, mainstream judges", Mr. "I'm deeply honored to be nominated to fill his seat on The Supreme Court", Brett said.

"No president has ever consulted more widely, or talked with more people from more backgrounds to seek input abut a Supreme Court nomination". Bob Casey of Pennsylvania issued a statement saying he would nearly certainly oppose the nominee - hours before Mr. Trump even made his announcement.

On the issues, Kavanaugh seems to tick numerous boxes of interest to Trump, who included him on a list of potential Supreme Court picks published by the White House in November 2017.

The fact that the president chose another conservative justice is more important than the name of that justice.

As a candidate, Trump vowed to appoint judges who would overturn Roe v. Wade. Trump signed Kavanaugh's nomination papers Monday evening in the White House residence. Kavanaugh will also attend the Senate policy lunch. He is an evangelical Christian whose book, Lead Yourself First, uses President Dwight Eisenhower, primatologist Jane Goodall, Winston Churchill, Martin Luther King Jr. and others as examples of "leaders who have used solitude to function more effectively". Kavanaugh, for instance, has not been as vocal about his opinions on abortion as, say, Amy Coney Barrett, another top contender for the role.

Critics accused Trump of outsourcing his selection to the conservative groups.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said that Judge Brett Kavanaugh is a "superb" Supreme Court pick and that senators should "put partisanship aside" in considering him. He's written 286 opinions, which is the most of any current judge under consideration.
