"How can you condemn a nominee before she or he has been named, and then declare your opposition to that person before you have even met with them?" John McCain (R-Ariz.) has been absent since December and is battling brain cancer.

Trump a year ago appointed Gorsuch, who has already become one of the most conservative justices, after Senate Republicans in 2016 refused to consider Democratic former president Barack Obama's nominee Merrick Garland to fill a vacancy left by the death of conservative Justice Antonin Scalia. "That would be binding precedent of the court".

Looking ahead to his confirmation hearings, Kavanaugh said, "I will tell each senator that I revere the Constitution".

"I'm not sure I'm leaning anywhere on those four nominees". "I thank God every day for my family", Kavanaugh said, praising his daughters, whose basketball team he coaches, as well as his wife, whom he met when both were working in the White House in 2001. I do think the president has to think about who is the easiest to get confirmed here.

Trump signed Kavanaugh's nomination papers Monday evening in the White House residence.

Donald Trump said: "What matters is not a judges political views but whether they can set aside those views to do what the law and the constitution require".

"I'm very confident with this president's enthusiasm and with Leader McConnell's enthusiasm that they can get anybody confirmed", Leo said on ABC. Kavanaugh has an extensive paper trail that could potentially enable Democrats to stretch the confirmation beyond the 2018 midterm election.

What is nearly certain - and those across the political spectrum agree - is that Kavanaugh's selection will spark a major confirmation battle in the U.S. Senate, where Republicans hold a narrow 51-49 majority and opposition Democrats say they will fight to prevent the high court from swinging further to the right.

Kavanaugh, 53, had always been mentioned in Washington chatter as a potential high court choice by a Republican president because of his educational background, intellectual firepower and an unyielding commitment to a legal approach championed by conservative Supreme Court justices such as Clarence Thomas and Samuel A. Alito Jr. But in terms of selecting his nominee, the president said he would not use Roe v. Wade as a litmus test for a nominee. While he has yet to reveal his sentiments on the 1973 Supreme Court decision that established a constitutional right to abortion access, he was involved with a dispute over whether a pregnant migrant woman who was being held by immigration authorities could receive an abortion in 2017, according to the Los Angeles Times.

"We have known this moment was coming, and so over a year we have been organizing in these Senate battleground states", she said, "knowing that these senators would be key to a confirmation battle". "An exhaustive and fair process took place for Justice Gorsuch, who I supported, and it should and must take place again now". Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of ME, have expressed concerns about a justice whose confirmation would threaten Roe v. Wade.

JCN played an active role in opposing the 2016 candidacy of Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court - a nomination that died during the final months of the Obama presidency - and supported the nomination and subsequent confirmation of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court a year ago. Many, including Leo, believe that it was a major contributing factor to his victory in 2016.

Kavanaugh, 53, was picked by former President George W. Bush to serve on the influential Washington-based appeals court in 2003. Kethledge, 51, is a judge for the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals. Judge Amy Coney Barrett is the favored nominee among the religious right. Kavanaugh also did preliminary work that led to Clinton's impeachment for an affair with a White House intern.
