Surface Go with Wi-Fi will be available for pre-order tomorrow, July 10 in select countries*, with products beginning to hit shelves on August 2. See PCMag's hands on.

While Surface Go doesn't have a fingerprint reader, it has something arguably better - a Windows Hello camera.

"Where will Surface go next?" This could work in Microsoft's favor in some ways because it might indicate that buyers are bored with what's now on offer and something new might reinvigorate sales. Industry watchers expected the device, dubbed the Surface Mini, to be released in 2014, but it never materialized. All signs indicate it's created to be affordable.

Microsoft is going for the low-end of the personal computing market with a smaller, cheaper Surface Go tablet that takes on Apple's cheapest iPads. This is in addition to the Surface Connector which can also be used for charging purposes and connecting the Surface desktop dock. The Go weighs 1.15 lbs, a little heavier than the iPad, but also about half a pound lighter than the beefier Surface Pro. However, Microsoft's rounded corners and edges on the gadget give it a more informal look when compared to the Surface Pro and Surface Books. Some of the features, borrowed from the more expensive Surfaces are unique though, and perhaps are the strongest way to convince students around the world that they don't need the cheapest or most common offerings from Google or Apple, but the simultaneously specialised and versatile Surface Go. It's also made much of the new device's ability to run full Office applications, a strong hint it feels that keyboard input is important to the device's success.

But then there are a few features that make the Surface Go much more practical than any iPad: first, it supports a USB-C 3.1 port for fast and easy transfer of data, and secondly, it has a microSD card slot for memory expansion. Microsoft says the 27-watt-hour battery is rated for up to 9 hours of battery life. Bloomberg reported in May that the company was planning low-cost Surface tablets to compete with Apple's iPad, and next we heard from WinFuture that the device might use Intel's lower-cost Pentium chips. Like other devices that come with S mode, such as the Surface Laptop, owners will be able to switch to the full version of Windows 10 for free. But the company has long said that the Surface line's main reason for being isn't sales volume, but rather as a way to show off what Windows can do when Microsoft designs the hardware. The Type Cover costs $99 while the new Mobile Mouse is $39.99.

The 4GB RAM and 64GB storage variant is priced at $399 (roughly Rs 34,323) and $549 (roughly 37,762) for the 8GB and 128GB storage variant.
