Sebastian Vettel took advantage of a bad start and disastrous first lap for Lewis Hamilton to win the British Grand Prix and extend his lead in the championship standings today.

Hamilton was on a charge from the first lap, back up to seventh after nine laps but still 26 seconds behind his fellow four-time world champion. "Sometimes we say dumb shit and we learn from it".

Lapping well around the 5.891-kilometre course, Hamilton soon moved into the points and was 25 seconds off Vettel by lap 9, with the German 5 seconds ahead of Bottas at the front.

Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas last won a race when he won the 2017 season finale, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, and Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen last won a race when he won the 2013 season opener, the Australian Grand Prix, when he was still driving for Lotus.

Later, after removing the post, and when addressing a fan who defended Hamilton, she added: "Just to be clear, I was not talking about the driver but the team who was crying afterwards that someone did something on goal".

Her cryptic comments are bound to anger Mercedes and Hamilton even though the Brit said he had accepted Raikkonen's full apology for wrecking his race. Englishman Allison, Mercedes' technical chief, left Ferrari in 2016 before joining the Silver Arrows. We're in for a serious fight which is great for the fans and I hope that we can pull through'.

The top six, now on the durable medium-compound tyre, settled into a rhythm, with Vettel leading Bottas ahead of Max Verstappen, Daniel Ricciardo and Raikkonen, but a lap-32 safety auto turned the grand prix on its head after Sauber's Marcus Ericsson had left his drag reduction system open as he entered turn one, crashing heavily into the barriers.

It was nearly Formula 1 - just slower: drivers contested the British Pedal Car Grand Prix in homemade cars powered by turning feet rather than high octane fuel.

Finland's Raikkonen, who was handed a 10-second penalty before finishing third, admitted he had made a mistake, while Vettel said it is "quite silly" to think there was anything deliberate.

Instead, Mercedes suspects the complaints over the team radio early in the race were triggered by how bad the vehicle felt in the turbulent air of other cars.

"Allison worked at Maranello for many years, but now we are here in England teaching him to be a gentleman". Bringing people closer to the sport is one thing, but asking them to help develop their sport is the next step.

"We want to be aggressive", he added.

With fourteen laps to go a second safety auto period caused by Carlos Sainz [Renault] and Romain Grosjean [Haas] came together.

"So by the time I came out on the podium, I think he composed himself".

"Yes I would have loved for us to build a gap in Austria, Montreal and Silverstone because we lose some in Hungary and we lose some in Singapore".

Hamilton's £40million-a-season contract extension, which will rubber-stamp the driver's status as Britain's best-paid sportsman, is due to be announced.
