Thailand Rescue Officials Say Elon Musk's Submarine Was 'Not Practical'

Divers rescue fifth boy from flooded Thailand cave Eight boys rescued from cave in northern Thailand

The Thai rescue effort has been assisted by experts from around the world, and the death of a former Thai Navy Seal diver who ran out of oxygen in the cave on Friday underscored the dangers of the mission.

Thought their harrowing ordeal scored them an invitation from Federation Internationale de Football Association to attend the World Cup final in Russia, the rescued Wild Boars soccer team will not be able to attend the match.

The Thai Navy SEALs said they still were waiting on four SEAL personnel to come out of the cave after they stayed with the boys on a dry shelf inside the flooded cave.

On Tuesday, the final members of the team were brought out to complete the rescue, and the news has been welcomed across football.

The acting governor of Chiang Rai state, Narongsak Osottanakorn, led the rescue operation.

On Tuesday, the final four boys were brought out, along with their coach.

Cheers erupted from the dozens of volunteers and journalists awaiting news of whether the intricate and high-risk rescue mission had succeeded. The first and longest mission took 11 hours. They did get a treat, however: bread with chocolate spread that they'd requested.

When British divers finally arrived on the scene, videos showed the boys looking eerily calm, smiling weakly for the cameras - with Mr Chanthawong the weakest of them all after reportedly sharing out much of his own food rations to the boys.

There was no immediate update on the health of the remaining five who emerged from the cave on Tuesday, but Thai Navy SEALS said they were "safe". Medical officials told reporters that they're healthy, fever-free, mentally fit and "seem to be in high spirits".

"They are diving in something considered (an) extremely hazardous environment in zero visibility, the only light that is in there is the torch light we bring".

Narongsak said the rescued boys had not been identified out of respect for the families whose sons were still trapped.

It was clear doctors were taking a cautious approach.

They stuck with the plan for experienced cave divers to help the boys swim out, which turned out to be a success.

"All eight are in good health, no fever. everyone is in a good mental state", Jedsada Chokdamrongsuk, permanent secretary of the public health ministry, said before all 13 had been rescued.

Two of the boys had suspected lung infections but the four boys from the first group rescued were all walking around in hospital.

At least nine ambulances and a convoy of other vehicles were at the cave site Tuesday.

Rescuers have been pumping out flood waters but scattered monsoon rain has raised the danger of more water percolating back down through the limestone and coursing through the tunnels.
